SWEEP! Softball Wraps Up Season With a Sweep of Lock Haven on Sunday

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg softball team wrapped up the regular season with a sweep of Lock Haven University behind a pair of impressive pitching performances and timely hitting from the Huskies. Bloomsburg took the first game 4-1 before completing the sweep with a 12-1 5-inning win in the night cap. The Huskies wrap up the season with a 17-17 overall record and a 15-17 slate in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East play while the Bald Eagles end finish with a 10-22 record for the year and in conference action.

In her final start as a Husky, redshirt junior Abby Wild (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) went the full 7.0 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and four walks while she struck out 13, just one shy of her career-best. Wild struck out at least one batter in six of the seven innings of work and had five innings with at least two Ks.

Offensively, the Huskies were led by senior Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) with a pair of hits, a run and an RBI, and junior Rebecca Rossi (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) who went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Junior Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) went 1-for-3 for the day and scored a pair of runs.

The Huskies wasted little time in game one getting on the board. With one out in the top of the first, Starr drew a walk for the first base runner of the game. Ray doubled to right center to bring home Starr and give BU a 1-0 lead. Junior Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) sacrificed Ray over to third and freshman Alexis Iseminger reached on an error that allowed Ray to come home for the 2-0 lead.

Wild kept the Bald Eagles in check in the bottom of the first and both teams went scoreless in the second. The Huskies added a pair of insurance runs for Wild in the third. Starr led off the inning and reached on a Lock Haven error. Ray moved her to third with a single to left and DelPierre picked up her first RBI of the game with a single up the middle to bring around Starr. After Iseminger reached on a fielder's choice that got Ray at third but moved DelPierre into scoring position, Rossi singled up the middle and DelPierre came around to score to give Bloomsburg a 4-0 lead.

The four-run cushion proved to be more than enough for Wild. Wild got a 1-2-3 third inning before allowing the only run of the game to LHU in the bottom of the fourth. Haley Lestician led off the inning with a solo home run to left center to cut the BU lead down to 4-1. Wild got the next two batters swinging before giving up a two-out walk to Mikayla Ruppert. Wild shut the door on the Bald Eagles, however, catching Morgan Karasek looking to end the inning and keep it a three-run ball game.

The Huskies were held scoreless for the rest of the game but Wild collected five strike outs in the final three innings to secure the 4-1 Bloomsburg win.

Not to be outdone, senior Tara Baney (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) followed with an impressive final out for the Huskies in game two. Baney went the distance, a 5.0 inning complete game, allowing just one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out two. Bany carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the fourth inning for Bloomsburg.

Offensively, Bloomsburg collected hits up and down the line up. DelPierre led the way with three hits while Starr, Ray, Rossi, and junior Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area) all had a pair of hits. Rossi drove in four runs while Ray scored three times.

After both teams went scoreless in the first, Bloomsburg scored at least one run in the final four innings. In the top of the second, junior Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) singled to left and stole second to get into scoring position. One out later, freshman Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) reached on an error by the LHU first baseman and Barnes was able to come home on the play.

The Huskies added to their lead with a four-run third to take a 5-0 advantage. Ray led off the frame with a double to left center and DelPierre singled but was able to take third on an error which allowed Ray to come around and score. After Iseminger was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners, Rossi doubled to left to bring home both DelPierre and Iseminger. Wetzler moved Rossi to third with a ground out and Barnes brought her home on a ground out to short to give BU a 5-0 lead.

Baney set the Bald Eagles down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and the Huskies went back to work in the top of the fourth. With one out, Starr reached on an error and Ray singled up the middle and moved Starr to third on an error by the center fielders. DelPierre singled to load the bases and senior Balee Leeser (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) reached on a fielder's choice that got Starr out at home but kept the bases loaded. Rossi continued to swing a hot bat and singled to bring home DelPierre and Ray and move Leeser to third. Wetzler kept the hit parade going and singled through the left side to score Leeser and extend the Husky lead to 8-0.

Baney gave up her first hit of the game as Lestician doubled to left center. After moving to third on a groundout, Lestician scored on another ground out to second for the first and only run of the ball game for Lock Haven. Baney closed out the inning getting Ruppert to ground out to short stop.

Bloomsburg tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth as Leeser singled with the bases loaded to bring home Lenner and Starr to give Bloomsburg a 10-1 lead. Now with two on and two out, Wetzler rounded out the scoring for BU with a double to left center that brought home Leeser and Ray for the 12-1 advantage.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Madison Mathes singled to third and Stef O'Grady singled up the middle to put two runners on for the first time for LHU. Baney got Riley McClellan to line into a double play at short, as Starr got Mathes out at second as she was off the bag.

Baney improved to 6-10 with the win while Madison Waltman took the loss for the Bald Eagles.

The doubleheader closes out the season for the Huskies at 17-17 and 15-17 in PSAC East play.
