Late-Inning Magic Lifts Baseball To 3-2, Ten-Inning Victory Over Charleston In Regional Opener

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – It's not how you start – it's how you finish.

The postseason magic continued for the Bloomsburg University baseball team in game one of the NCAA Atlantic Regional on Thursday morning as the fourth-seeded Huskies came from behind to knock off fifth-seeded University of Charleston, 3-2, in ten innings. Bloomsburg improved to 24-16 on the season while Charleston dropped to 31-12.

The veterans came through in a big way for Bloomsburg as fifth-year senior Cole Swiger (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) tied the game with a two-strike, two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth and then redshirt junior Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) belted a walk-off, two-strike, solo home run in the bottom of the tenth as the Huskies stunned the Golden Eagles.

Redshirt junior Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) started the eighth-inning rally for the Huskies when he bounced a two-out single back up the middle off of Charleston starter, Logan Campbell. Newbert came in to score on Swiger's game-tying two-run home run to right field – his seventh round-tripper of the season and 28th of his career – to tie the game at 2-2 and to end Campbell's afternoon on the mound.

Both teams went scoreless in the ninth and redshirt freshman Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) kept the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard in the top of the tenth to set the stage for OFier's heroics. The slugging second baseman fell behind 1-2 in the count before hammering the game-winner over the left-center field fence off of Charleston reliever, Robert Fultineer, for his second walk-off home run of the season. OFier took over the team lead in home run with ten following the game-winning blast.

The walk-off round-tripper from OFier made Baranski a winner out of the Bloomsburg bullpen. The right-hander allowed only one hit while striking out one in two scoreless innings of relief. He improved to 5-1 on the season.

Freshman Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) was sensational for the Huskies as he matched Campbell pitch-for-pitch in a no-decision. The southpaw faced the minimum through three and two-thirds innings before running into trouble with two outs in the fourth.

Charleston scored its first run of the contest in the fourth as Tyler Dellerman coaxed a two-out walk and then advanced to second when Drew Hafner was hit by a pitch. Braxton Boddorf followed with a single to left to bring home Dellerman for the first run of the contest.

In the top of the seventh, Standen left after allowing a one-out double to Hayden Cartt, ending his third consecutive tremendous start for the Huskies in the postseason. Redshirt freshman Logan Hile (Winfield, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) came on in relief and immediately allowed an RBI single to Pete Costigan as Charleston extended its lead to 2-0. Hile prevented any further damage in the seventh and pitched a perfect eighth inning to keep the Huskies within striking distance.

Standen allowed two runs on four hits in six and one-third innings. He walked two and struck out five in the no-decision. Hile, meanwhile, struck out three and allowed only the hit to Costigan in seventh over an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief.

The Huskies loaded the bases in each of the first two innings against Campbell but could not crack the scoreboard in either frame. Campbell settled down from that point on and shut down Bloomsburg until the eighth-inning trouble. The right-hander scattered seven hits and was charged with two runs allowed in seven and two-thirds innings. He walked two and struck out ten.

Fultineer dropped to 4-2 on the year with OFier's walk-off home run the only baserunner he allowed in an inning and a third.

Bloomsburg out-hit Charleston, 8-6, in the contest. OFier finished 2-for-5 while Swiger joined redshirt sophomore Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), redshirt junior Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech), Newbert, Swiger, senior Andrew Holmes (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township), and redshirt junior Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) with one hit each on the day.

The Huskies will get right back to work in the winner's bracket as they will take on top-seeded Seton Hill University at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, drop to the loser's bracket and will square off against the loser of the Millersville-West Virginia State contest on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.
