Evans' Second Half Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Over Mercyhurst Sunday Afternoon

The 2-1 win over the Lakers is just the third win for the Huskies against Mercyhurst

Bloomsburg, Pa.- The Bloomsburg men's soccer team played on their own field for the first time since 2019 and picked up a 2-1 win against the Mercyhurst Lakers. With the first home win of the season, the Huskies improve their record to 2-0, while the Lakers fall to 0-2.

The first half started out aggressively as Mercyhurst freshman, Sean Kerrigan scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute. Shortly following Mercyhurst goal, Bloomsburg freshman Anthony Schlee (/) tied the game with an impressive header off of a corner kick by junior Olly Whitman. The Lakers put three on net, with two impressive saves by red shirt sophomore goalie Nathan Slotnick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), while the Huskies were not too far ahead and put four on net with three corner kicks.

In the second half, Mercyhurst outshot the Huskies 11-2 with Slotnick making four impressive saves to keep the score tied at 1-1. A Mercyhurst yellow card set up a free kick that allowed junior Bryce Evans (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) to break the tie and score for the Huskies in the 67th minute of the game, with the assist coming from Junior Liam Harmon (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area).

Whitman took the free kick for the Huskies and put the ball perfectly into the box and Harmon deflected on to Evans who was waiting for the pass inside the near post. Evans got it past the Mercyhurst goalie to his right for his first goal of the season.

The Lakers held a 14-6 advantage in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Anthony Schlee (/) led the Huskies with three out of the six shots taken.

Slotnick finished the game with four saves total while Mercyhurst goalie, Jonathan Gomes did not make a save.

The Huskies are on the road Wednesday as they head to New York to take on the St. Thomas Aquinas at 3:30 pm.
