Women's Basketball Extends Winning Streak to Five; Takes Down Millersville on the Road

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Saturday afternoon, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team pushed its winning streak to five with a dominant 66-49 win over Millersville University. The Huskies improved to 9-7 for the year and 7-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action, while the Marauders fell to 1-10 and 0-6 in conference play.
 
The Huskies featured three players in double figures as Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) had a game-best 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) posted 16 points and added eight boards, six assists, and three steals, while Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) finished the day with 11 points and three assists.
 
As a team, the Huskies shot 41.7% (25-for-60) from the floor and were 4-of-8 (50%) from the three-point range. Bloomsburg shot 66.7% (12-for-18) from the free-throw line.
 
Bloomsburg forced 11 of the Marauders' 20 turnovers and took advantage of the miscues with 21 points off of turnovers. The Huskies posted 18 second-chance points as they out-rebounded Millersville 40-29, including pulling down 14 boards.
 
Millersville was led by Erika Reed with 10 points, while Lauren Lister and La'shyra Williams each added nine. Lister led the team with five rebounds as well.
 
As a team, the Marauders were 21-for-55 (38.2%) from the floor and just 2-for-12 (16.7) from three-point range and 50% (5-for-10 from the free-throw line.
 
Corridoni gave the Huskies the lead in the first 27 seconds of action with a layup as the shot clock was winding down, but Millersville answered with a layup at the 8:36 mark to tie the game 2-2. Makiah Shaw gave Millersville its first lead with a layup at the 7:52 mark. Saxton tied the game just over 45 seconds later, and Fisher retook the lead for Bloomsburg, 6-4, with 6:37 to play in the opening quarter.
 
Millersville trimmed the Huskies' advantage to one, 12-11, with 1:54 to play, but Katelin Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) made a layup, and Saxton finished off a shot in the paint with 41 seconds to go to give Bloomsburg a 16-11 lead. Reed hit the final shot of the quarter, a three with 12 seconds to play, to trim the Huskies' lead to two heading into the second quarter.
 
Bloomsburg led by as many as nine in the second quarter, 29-20 at the 5:34 mark thanks to a three from Brusha, but Millersville hung around and eventually cut the lead to five, 34-29 going into halftime.
 
The Marauders kept things close in the third quarter as they got to within one, 39-38, with 5:54 to go in the period. With 4:25 to play, Millersville took its first lead of the game since the opening two minutes as Shaw made a layup to give the Marauders a 40-39 lead. However, the lead was short-lived as Saxton converted a layup at the 3:32 mark to retake the lead for BU and Fisher pushed the lead to three, 43-40, with 3:09 to play. Once again, the Marauders got to within one, 43-42, with 2:03 to play, but Bloomsburg ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to carry a 49-42 lead into the final period.
 
Bloomsburg out-scored Millersville 12-3 in the first five minutes of the final period to give the Huskies their largest lead of the game at that point, 61-45, with 4:16 to play. After a layup by Chandera Jones-Aryeh cut the lead to 14, 61-47, with 3:18 to play, Bloomsburg used a 5-2 run in the game's final 1:13 to seal the 66-49 win.
 
On Monday, the Huskies look to extend their winning streak as they open a four-game home stand with Mansfield University at Nelson Field House. The opening tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
