SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team fell to Pennsylvania State Athletic Association (PSAC) East divisional leader Shippensburg on Wednesday by a final tally of 90-64.
After falling behind early on, the Huskies (3-12, 2-9) used some quick scoring bursts to cut into the Raiders' (13-5, 10-3) lead, but their comeback efforts in the second half fell short despite some solid offensive output by several players.
Senior forward Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) and junior guard Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) led the Huskies in the scoring column with 19 points apiece. Elmore shot 9-12 from the field while adding six rebounds, two blocks and an assist to his stat sheet in 28 minutes of play. Along with freshman Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County), who gave Bloomsburg a spark off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds, Elmore and Anderson helped the Huskies come alive in the second half by cutting the team's deficit to 16 after trailing by as much as 27. But that would be as close as they would get to coming back against the divisional leaders.
Shippensburg was led in scoring by Rashon Johnson, who had 24 points, and had three other players in double figures.
Following the opening tip, the Huskies hung with the Raiders and found themselves in a 5-5 ballgame through the first four minutes. But that's when Shippensburg would go on a 23-8 run over the next seven minutes to gain an early advantage. Bloomsburg would answer, however, as the away team would cut its 15-point deficit to nine after Anderson made a pair of free throws with 1:49 remaining in the opening half. Shippensburg then responded and added to its lead before the half, making the score 45-32 at the break.
The second half consisted of much of the same action as Shippensburg started the final frame with a quick scoring burst that saw Bloomsburg answer on its offensive end. The half would eventually echo the same action as the first with the Raiders outscoring the Huskies 45-32 to make the final score 90-64.
Bloomsburg finished the game shooting 40.3% (27-67) from the field and did have a bright spot on the boards, outrebounding Shippensburg 46-40 and scoring 17 points with second-chance opportunities off of offensive rebounds. Freshman Hunter Healy (Quakertown PA/Bishop McDevitt) led the Huskies in rebounds with eight and junior forward Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) hauled in seven.
Another bright spot came from Bloomsburg scoring near the rim as 46 of the squad's 62 points came in the paint.
A big category that went in favor of Shippensburg was points off turnovers as the home team finished the game with 23.
The Huskies (3-12, 2-9) will return to action Saturday with a home contest against Millersville University. That game is scheduled to tip off at 1:00 pm.
