BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The men's soccer team beat Lock Haven for the first time since 2015 as the Huskies (11-2-1, 6-1-1 PSAC East) topped the Bald Eagles (5-7-3, 3-4-3 PSAC East) by a final tally of 3-2 Saturday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium.
Bloomsburg received three goals by three different players in the win, and it was a score by
Sammy Ames (Holly Ridge, N.C./Dixon) in the 67
th minute that turned out the game winner. The junior forward broke a 2-2 tie when he was able to score during a one-on-one scoring opportunity with Lock Haven's goalkeeper after being set up by a perfect through ball that was delivered by
Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley). Ames' fifth goal of the season gave Bloomsburg the final lead change as 23 minutes of scoreless play followed.
The contest saw a couple different lead changes throughout as it was Lock Haven who gained an early lead by scoring the first goal of the game. Colton Swanson delivered the first score 18 minutes into the contest to give the Bald Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Bloomsburg's offense, however, would answer almost immediately. Two minutes after Swanson's goal, Schlee brought the score back to even when he scored his sixth goal of the season on a hard-kicked ball that ricocheted off a Bald Eagles defender. The score was set up by
Shay Gillen (Archbald, Pa./Valley View), who was given the assist.
Six minutes after Schlee's goal,
Liam Harmon (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) gave the Huskies their first lead of the game when he scored during a free kick set piece. Harmon was able to score after receiving a header by
Kody Besser (Lacey Township, N.J./Lacey Township), who attacked the ball out of the air during a free kick that was delivered by
Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East). Besser and Hollis were credited with assists on the play.
In the second half, Lock Haven's Samuel Hershey knotted things back up when he scored in the final seconds of the 63
rd minute. Hershey's goal was his ninth of the year, which is the third-most in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).
The game remained even until the heroics by Ames in the 67
th minute.
Bloomsburg goalkeeper
Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) recorded three saves on three opportunities in the game, and the sophomore was able hold off Lock Haven's offensive attack during the final 23 minutes of play to pick up their seventh straight victory.
The Huskies remain on top of the PSAC Eastern Division following the win that puts their conference record at 6-1-1. Millersville (8-3-4, 5-2-3 PSAC East) is in second place and East Stroudsburg (6-7-1, 5-3-1 PSAC East) sits in third. West Chester (7-4-2, 4-2-2 PSAC East) is now fourth.
Bloomsburg will look to keep its winning streak alive during their next outing against Shepherd (1-8-6, 0-6-3 PSAC East) on Wednesday. The contest is at home and will kick off at 6:00 PM at Steph Pettit Stadium.
