#10 Field Hockey Falls to #4 Kutztown Tuesday

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The 10th-ranked Bloomsburg University field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to #4 Kutztown University Tuesday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 7-6 and 2-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), while the Golden Bears improved to 11-2 and 3-2 in the conference.

The two teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half, with shots relatively even at 5-3. With just 49 seconds to play in the third quarter, the Golden Bears broke the tie and took a 1-0 lead as Olivia Blasone tipped in a pass from Jillian Buchman in congestion in front of the cage.

After Kutztown got an insurance goal with 10 minutes to play in the fourth, the Huskies were awarded a penalty corner. Senior Bri Doebler (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) inserted the ball and eventually got back to it. Doebler got a shot off but was stopped by Katie Madara.

Senior Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) kept it a 2-0 game as she made three saves on three penalty corner shots in the final three minutes of regulation and the Golden Bears hung on to their 2-0 win.

The Golden Bears out-shot Bloomsburg 19-4 for the game, including a 14-1 advantage in the second half. KU held a 15-4 lead in corners as well.

Shaffer finished the game with a season-best 13 saves, and senior Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) posted a defensive save for the Huskies.

Williams, Doebler, junior Sam Schaffer (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), and sophomore Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) accounted for the shots for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg hits the road for the next two games as the Huskies travel to #9 Mansfield next Wednesday, October 26 for a 4:00 p.m. contest and #2 Shippensburg for a 12:00 p.m. game on Saturday, October 29.
