Huskies fall to Millersville on Senior Night

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team fell to Millersville 1-0 on Senior Night in their regular season finale at Steph Pettit Stadium Saturday evening.

The Huskies (13-4-1, 8-3-1 PSAC East) played well throughout and limited Millersville (10-3-5, 6-2-4 PSAC East) to just one goal on 20 shot attempts, but the Marauders' lone goal by Bob Hennessey in the 77th minute was good enough to allow the visiting team to escape with a narrow one-goal victory.

In the first half, both teams' defenses were able to bend and not break as neither team was able to cash in on scoring opportunities. Millersville controlled the ball for 57% of the half and took 11 shots in the frame, but Bloomsburg's defense was able to hold.

Millersville's best opportunity to score in the first half came in 34th minute when Matthew Lynch found himself in the box in a one-on-one situation with Bloomsburg goalkeeper Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area). Lynch was able to get a clean shot off with his right foot just inside the box, but Rimple came out of the net to deny the shot and keep the Marauders off the scoreboard.

Lynch got another shot off with under four minutes left to play in the half, but it hit off the left post and bounced into the arms of Rimple. Rimple finished the game with six saves.

For Bloomsburg, team's offense had two shot attempts in the first half but both were on target. In the 12thminute, Patrick Walsh (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) took the squad's first shot of the game but it was saved by Millersville goalkeeper Bobby Bosch.

In the closing seconds of the first half, the Huskies had arguably its best opportunity to score during a counterattack. The scoring opportunity was created when Sammy Ames (Holly Ridge, N.C./Dixon) had a nice run up the left sideline after gaining possession of the ball at midfield then delivered a cross to an open Collis Heleine (Cambridge, England/Hills Road Sixth Form College) in front of the net. Heleine was able to get a shot off, but it was deflected by Bosch and sent out of bounds with 10 seconds remaining. Time expired before the Huskies were able to take the corner kick.

In the second half, Bloomsburg's offense kept up where it left off in the closing seconds of the first as the Huskies rattled off eight shots in the frame. Sixteen minutes into the second half, Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Liam Harmon (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) had a chance to score the first goal of the game during another counterattack. Harmon intercepted a pass that lead to a fastbreak in the attacking end of the field with his fellow Husky teammate. A give-and-go from Harmon to Schlee, then back to Harmon led to a shot in front of the net, but the graduate forward's attempt went wide as the Marauders escaped another scoring threat.

Nine minutes after the shot by Harmon, Millersville was able to score the lone goal of the game when Hennessey dribbled through a couple of Bloomsburg defenders and got a shot off from inside the box. Hennessey's shot ricocheted off a defender and into the left-hand side of the goal for the game-winning score.

The Huskies had three more shot attempts after the score by Millersville, but two were saved by Bosch and one was off target.

Prior to the contest, Bloomsburg already had clinched the No. 1 seed for the PSAC Tournament. The No. 1 seed guarantees a spot in the semifinals, and Bloomsburg will host two semifinal games on Friday along with the championship matchup on Sunday.

The Huskies will play their semifinal game on Friday at 2:30 PM and the championship game will be held at 1:00 PM on Sunday, Nov. 6.
