BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Goals by
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) and
Alivia Gallardo (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) led the Bloomsburg University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Mansfield University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest Wednesday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Huskies (9-3, 7-3 PSAC East) led the contest for 81 minutes thanks to an early goal by Varano that gave Bloomsburg a quick 1-0 lead over the Mountaineers (2-9-1, 0-9-1 PSAC East). The score was Varano's seventh of the year, which is tied for the most in the PSAC, and the game winner was set up by
Paige Harris (Danville, Pa./Danville Area), who gathered a loose ball on a corner kick and sent it to a wide open Varano in front of the net.
Bloomsburg continued to keep its foot on the gas on the offensive end for the remainder of the half, and that resulted in the Huskies outshooting the Mountaineers 6-1 in the opening frame. The second half saw much of the same as Bloomsburg outshot Mansfield 9-5 in the final half, but the Mountaineer's scoring opportunities were as close they get.
Mansfield's closest scoring attempt came in the second half with under 12 minutes to play when Katelyn Rueppel received a long through ball in the attacking end of the field and found herself in a one-on-one situation with Bloomsburg goalkeeper
Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), who came out of the box to defend. Reuppel was able to get the shot off and around the right side of Spingler, but the veteran goalkeeper was able to force Reuppel's shot to run wide and just by the far post and out of bounds for a Bloomsburg goal kick.
The shot attempt would be the final one by Mansfield in the contest, and Bloomsburg was able to make the contest a two-score game nine minutes later when Gallardo scored her second goal of the season. Gallardo was able to score her goal in the 87
th minute after she gathered a loose ball in front of the net that was up for grabs after Mansfield's goalkeeper deflected a shot attempt by Varano in the box. The goal made it a two-score game, which is where the score stayed for the remainder of the contest.
The Huskies outshot the Mountaineers 15-6 for the game, and eight of Bloomsburg's shots were on goal. Six different players were responsible for putting a shot on goal.
Bloomsburg took a whopping 13 corner kicks in the contest, opposed to Mansfield's three.
Spingler recorded her sixth shutout of the year with Bloomsburg's 2-0 victory, and her six shutouts are tied for the third most in the conference. Spingler's .511 goals against average and 86.4% save percentage also rank as the third best marks in the PSAC to date.
Varano's five game-winning goals are the most in the PSAC. Harris' fifth assist of the year is tied for the most in the conference with four other players.
The Huskies will be back in action with another home PSAC East contest against Shepherd (4-4-4, 3-4-3 PSAC East) on Saturday, October 8. The game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 PM at Steph Pettit Stadium.
