WEST CHESTER, Pa – After a hard-fought, 110 minutes of soccer, the Bloomsburg women's soccer team bowed out of the NCAA Tournament with a 3-2 loss in overtime to West Virginia State University.
Â
The Huskies struck first with an aggressive opening half. At the 9:39 mark, Bloomsburg earned its second corner kick of the half. Junior
Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) curved the ball in front of the net from the corner spot, and graduate student
Nicole Varano (Mt. Carmel, Pa./Mt. Carmel) finished it off to give BU a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Yellow Jackets had their first real chance on the net, but senior
Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) stopped the ball in the ball in the bottom left corner to keep WVSU off the board.
Â
Midway through the half, the Huskies pushed their lead to 2-0 thanks to a strike from 30 yards out by
Lauren McIntyre (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge). After a shot by
Lauren Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia), the WVSU defense pushed the ball to midfield, but junior
Alivia Gallardo (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) corralled the ball and pushed it back to McIntyre, who went high in the top of the net for the 2-0 lead in the 24
th minute.
Â
After the second Husky goal, the Yellow Jackets started to put the pressure on and eventually earned a penalty kick with six minutes to play before halftime. Fran Soares-Cupertino finished the PK in the bottom right corner and cut the lead to 2-1. The Yellow Jackets put one final attempt on goal in the final seconds of the half, but Spingler turned the attempt away, and Bloomsburg took its 2-1 lead into halftime.
Â
West Virginia State tied the game with 25 minutes to play in regulation. The Yellow Jackets put a corner kick into the box, but Spingler punched the ball away. Billie Jean Davies pushed the ball back to Ingrid Barbosa de Castro, who finished it high for the game-tying tally.
Â
With 1:54 to play in regulation, the Huskies got another corner kick after senior
Campbell Power's (Souderton, Pa./Souderton Area) shot was deflected out of bounds over the end line. Power curved the ball into the net, and the Huskies appeared to have the game-winning goal with just over a minute to play, but the goal was called back due to a foul called on Bloomsburg.
Â
The game headed into overtime, which meant two 10-minute extra periods due to the new rules in NCAA soccer.
Â
With 29 seconds to play in the first overtime, Soares-Cupertino found the back of the net for the second time in the game to give WVSU a 3-2 lead.
Â
The Huskies had the only shot of the second overtime period as Bull's shot off another corner just missed the corner in the far side of the net, and the Yellow Jackets hung on for the 3-2 win.
Â
The Huskies out-shot West Virginia State 20-12 though shots on goal were even at seven each. The Huskies held an 18-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
The Huskies end the year at 14-5-2 after advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth-straight season.
