BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's basketball team fell to Charleston (W.Va.) by a final score of 96-62 during a non-conference game at home Wednesday evening.
With the score tied at 8-8 early on in the first half, the Golden Eagles (6-5, 4-2 MEC) went on a 9-0 run to gain their first lead of the game, and Charleston was able to stretch its early lead throughout the remainder of the contest thanks to an impressive shooting performance that saw the team convert 60% of its field goal attempts.
Charleston was 39-for-65 (60%) from the field and 13-for-25 (52%) from three-point range. The Golden Eagles also scored 12 points on second-chance opportunities.
The Huskies (0-6, 0-2 PSAC) were paced offensively by
Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin), who had 19 points to go along with nine rebounds.
Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Fork Union Military Academy) was also in double figures, finishing with 10 points and four rebounds.
Desmond Freeman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) had nine points and
Cam Villarouel (Cumming, GA/State College (PA)) had eight points in 22 minutes off the bench. Villarouel also added five rebounds.
For Charleston, the team had six players finish in double figures and the squad was led in scoring by Shunta Wilson, who led all players with 21 points off the bench on a 9-for-12 shooting night. Jeremiah Keene had 17 points and fellow starter Eddie Colbert III added 16. Tyler Eberhart (14 points), Keith Williams (13 points) and Keaton Turner (11 points) were the other three Golden Eagles to finish in double figures.
Bloomsburg kept up with Charleston in the rebounding category as both teams finished the game with 36 rebounds. The Huskies scored 30 of their 62 points in the paint, and eight of their points came on second-chance opportunities. Defensively, the Huskies forced Charleston to commit 10 turnovers.
Charleston's defense limited Bloomsburg to a 39.7% (27-for-68) shooting night. The Huskies were 4-for-19 (21.1%) from three-point range as Freeman, Nelson,
Louie Wild (Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) and
Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) each made a three. Wild had seven points and Harris finished the day with three points as he went a total of 1-for-3 on field goal attempts during his 13 minutes off the bench.
Bloomsburg will have off until the weekend, which is when the team travels to the western part of the state to take on California (Pa.) and Slippery Rock in a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matchups. The Huskies will play at California (Pa.) on Sunday and at Slippery Rock on Monday. Both games are scheduled to tip off at 3:00 PM after the women's teams square off at 1:00 PM.
