WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The men's basketball team fell to West Chester in an away conference game Saturday afternoon, 91-58.
An early deficit and tough day shooting plagued the Huskies throughout the contest as West Chester was able to hit a high percentage of the shot attempts to capture the double-digit win.
Cam Villarouel (Cumming, GA/State College (PA)) was a big bright spot for Bloomsburg as the freshman recorded career-highs in points (17), rebounds (7) and steals (2) in 30 minutes off the bench. Villarouel was the team's leading scorer and was 7-11 from the floor. Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) added 16 points and had six steals while Travis Elmore (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) finished with 13 points on a 6-10 shooting night. Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin) was tied for a team-high seven rebounds with Villarouel.
West Chester took the first lead of the contest on its second possession and went on a quick 13-2 run to take control early. The Huskies pulled back to within seven twice over the next five minutes, but the Golden Rams went on a 14-0 run to make it a 31-10 game with 7:43 to go in the half. West Chester shot 54.84% from the field in the first half to take a 48-30 lead into the break.
In the second half, the home team kept up its hot night shooting the ball and was able to extend its lead to 29 after the first 10 minutes of play. West Chester's ability score kept the margin to double-digits the entire second half as Bloomsburg was unable to spark a rally.
The Huskies shot 37.3% (22-59) from the floor throughout the game and were 0-11 from beyond the arc. West Chester had a big advantage on the glass, outrebounding Bloomsburg 55-26. The Golden Rams also had 50 points in the paint and scored 30 second-chance points in the win.
West Chester never trailed in Saturday's contest and had four different players finish in double figures. Elijah Allen led the way with 19 points while Kyle McGee had a 16-point double-double and Matt Dade added 15. Robert Smith was the fourth player in double-digits with 14 points.
Bloomsburg (4-17, 3-14 PSAC) will return to action on Monday with a home game against Mansfield (4-19, 3-14 PSAC). The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM.
