SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team lost an away conference game at Shepherd University Monday evening by a final score of 88-76.
The Huskies led early on in the first half, but a scoring run by the Rams gave them a double-digit lead that they would cling to for the remainder of the game.
Justin Anderson (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) led Bloomsburg in scoring with 21 points on a 10-16 shooting night. Hunter Healy (Quakertown PA/Bishop McDevitt) was 5-5 from the field and scored 13 points in 18 minutes off the bench to go along with five rebounds. Cam Villarouel (Cumming, GA/State College (PA)) was the third scorer in double figures as the freshman had 10 points off the bench. Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) and Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) had nine points each as the team's next two leading scorers.
The loss comes despite a sharp night shooting from the floor for the Huskies as the squad was 31-53 (58.5%) on field goals, which includes a shot chart of 18-27 (66.7%) in the second half. The first-half deficit and a high percentage of made field goals by the Rams was too much to overcome.
The Huskies began the game on a 7-2 run to take an early two-possession lead two minutes into the game. The Rams then responded with a 12-2 run to gain their first lead of the game and make it a 14-9 contest with 16:16 left to play in the first. Bloomsburg knotted it up at 14 after scores by Healy and Anderson on back-to-back possessions, but Shepherd seized control of the game by going on a 17-2 scoring run over the next four minutes to make it a 31-16 game. Bloomsburg cut the deficit to eight after a three by Bengel with 8:56 left, but that would be as tight as the contest would get for the remainder of the game. Shepherd led 46-32 at the half and stretched their lead to as much as 22 in the second half before things ended at 88-76.
Kyle Daggett led Shepherd with 24 points and seven rebounds. Phillip Jordan had 19 points off the bench as Cam Stephens and Jon Preston added 15 and 12 points. The Rams shot 65.38% (17-26) in the first half and were 33-56 (58.9%) from the floor for the game. In addition, Shepherd was 12-24 from beyond the arc.
Bloomsburg (5-20, 4-17 PSAC) will travel to Kutztown (8-18, 5-15 PSAC) on Wednesday for their season finale. The game will tip off at 7:30 PM.
