HAMPTON, Va. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team completed its weekend sweep over Newport News Apprentice School with a 4-0 victory over the Builders on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.
The Huskies gained the lead with a three-run third inning and added an insurance run in the sixth as four Bloomsburg pitchers combined to hold the Builders scoreless and to just five hits throughout the game.
Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick), Scott Gilbert (Scranton, Pa./Abington Heights), Mason Keene (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) and Casey Fitzsimmons (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross) combined for 10 strikeouts and just two walks during the shutout win. Marshman picked up the win for his second of the season. The scoreless nine-inning game caps off a weekend that saw Bloomsburg's pitching staff allow just one run in 23 innings while striking out 31 batters.
Offensively, Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) led the Huskies with two hits, a run batted in and a run scored. Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had an RBI as Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) all scored and recorded hits. Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) was 1-1 during the game and also reached base on a walk. Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) also recorded hits as the Huskies tallied a total of nine hits during the game.
The victory gives Bloomsburg a perfect weekend as the team went 3-0 against Newport News Apprentice School following a sweep during a doubleheader on Friday.
The Huskies (5-2, 0-0 PSAC) will play Wilmington University (Del.) on Friday, March 4 in their next contest. The game will be played in Wilson, North Carolina as part of the Wilson Tobs Tournament.
