EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Once again, the Bloomsburg University women's basketball team relied on its stingy defense as the Huskies posted a 53-41 win over East Stroudsburg University, Wednesday evening. The Huskies improved to 16-8 and 14-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action while the Warriors dropped to 2-19 and 1-17 in conference play.
Â
The Huskies have held opponents to less than 50 points six times this season and have held the Warriors to just 41 and 42 points in their two meetings. Opponents are averaging just 56.7 points against the Huskies, good enough for fourth in the PSAC.
Â
Anchoring that defense is graduate student
Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) as she led the Huskies with a pair of steals and chipped in one block, 11 points, and four rebounds. She led the defense that allowed just one double-digit scorer for the Warriors and a 31.5% shooting day for ESU.
Â
Graduate student
Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) led the Huskies' offense once again as she posted her third-straight double-double and eighth of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Corridoni was a season-high 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. Sophomore
Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) added eight points and a pair of steals, while junior
Samantha Brusha (Abington, PA/Abington) added seven points.
Â
As a team, the Huskies shot 19-for-51 from the floor (37.3%) and were just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc. Bloomsburg finished the day 14-for-19 from the free-throw line. The Huskies dominated on the glass, as they out-rebounded the Warriors 41-31 and allowed just five offensive rebounds for the game.
Â
With 3:04 to go in the second quarter and the Huskies down 24-21, Saxton completed the traditional three-point play to tie the game at 24-24. Fisher tipped the ball out of Corrin Gill's hands and took to it the other end of the court for an easy layup and the Husky lead, 26-24. She hit a jumper in the paint in the final five seconds of the half to give Bloomsburg a 28-24 lead going into halftime.
Â
The Huskies did not surrender to the lead for the rest of the game and used a 12-4 third quarter to build a relatively comfortable 40-28 lead going into the final period. The Warriors cut the deficit to seven, 48-41, with 2:03 to play, but Corridoni went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes to seal the 53-41 win.
Â
The Huskies continue their road trip on Saturday as Bloomsburg visits West Chester University for a 1:00 pm PSAC contest in West Chester, Pa. The Golden Rams come into the game 7-14 for the year and 5-10 in conference play after a 63-58 set back to Shippensburg on Wednesday. Bloomsburg came out on top 61-50 at Nelson Field House in the first meeting between the Huskies and Golden Rams.
