No. 2 Women's Basketball Falls to No. 3 Shepherd in PSAC Quarterfinals

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The No.2 Bloomsburg University women's basketball team fell to No. 3 Shepherd University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament quarterfinals, Wednesday evening, 76-53, at Nelson Field House. The Huskies dropped to 18-11 while the Rams improved to 24-6.

Sophomore Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) led Bloomsburg with a career-best 16 points and seven rebounds, while graduate student Meghan Corridoni (Exeter, Pa./Holy Redeemer) chipped in 10 points and pulled down six boards. Graduate student Emma Saxton (York, Pa./Central York) finished the day with nine points and five rebounds, while freshman Ella Kale (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) had five points and three assists.

As a team, the Huskies were held to a 28.6% shooting day from the floor and were 2-of-19 from three-point range. Bloomsburg finished the day 5-for-19 from the free-throw line.

The Huskies won the rebounding battle 42-39 and outscored the Rams 16-10 on second-chance points, but Shepherd used 48 points in the paint to push past the Huskies.

The Rams shot 45.9% from the floor (28-for-61) for the game and were 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. Shepherd was nearly perfect at the free-throw line as the Rams went 16-for-18, including Abby Beeman's 10-for-10 day at the charity stripe.

Beeman led the Rams with 32 points, while Sydney Clayton posted 25 and had 12 rebounds. Beeman also dished out 10 assists for Shepherd.

The Huskies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead thanks to a jumper from Corridoni and an offensive rebound and put back for freshman Katelin Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick). The Rams tied the game at 4-4 with 6:31 to play before a free throw from Corridoni made it a 5-4 game. Shepherd took its first lead of the game with 4:01 to play as Beeman finished off a layup to make it 6-5, but Gochnauer tied it again with a free throw at the 3:43 mark. Beeman and Gochnauer traded buckets before Clayton gave the Rams the lead for good with 1:38 to play as she finished off a fast-break layup for the 10-8 lead. At the end of the quarter, Saxton made a layup to make it a 12-10 game at the first break, but that would be as close as the Huskies would come to the Rams.

Shepherd outscored the Huskies 21-16 in the second quarter to take a 33-16 lead into halftime and pushed its lead to 52-31 at the end of the third, thanks to a 19-15 third. The Rams finished off the game with a 24-12 fourth quarter to seal the 76-53 win and advance to the semifinals against Cal U on Saturday.

The Huskies now wait to see if they earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament after putting together an 18-11 season and the No. 2 seed in the PSAC Tournament. The NCAA selection show happens Sunday, March 6 at 10:00 pm.
