BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University baseball team beat Kutztown in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Huskies topped the Golden Bears 4-3 in the first game before beating their conference opponent 10-8 in Game 2.
The two wins on Saturday for Bloomsburg completes a three-game sweep over Kutztown and gives the Huskies an overall record of 14-9-1 (6-2-1 PSAC).
In the first game, Bloomsburg scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning when
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) advanced home on a balk. Newbert was 2-4 on the day with two doubles, one run batted in and a run scored.
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) was 2-3 with two doubles, one RBI and a run scored.
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area),
Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) also had one hit to give the Huskies a total of seven.
Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) picked up his third win of the season after allowing just one hit and no runs in three innings pitched.
Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) threw five innings, allowing just three runs on six hits.
In the second game, Bloomsburg jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings and despite two four-run innings by Kutztown, the Huskies held on for a 10-8 victory. Bloomsburg scored its 10 runs on seven hits, with the first coming on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first inning. The Huskies had three-run innings in the second and third as
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and OFier had RBI hits to go along with a few more miscellaneous runs. Bloomsburg scored runs on a throwing error and wild pitch in the third inning. The Huskies added two more in the top of the fourth to make it 9-0, but Kutztown answered in the bottom-half of the inning by scoring four runs on three singles. The Golden Bears threatened to tie the game up in the bottom of the seventh by scoring four more runs, but their rally was cut off when a strikeout ended the game with the final tally at 10-8.
Kolby Burrow picked up the win on the mound for Bloomsburg as four different pitchers limited Kutztown to 12 hits and eight runs through seven innings. OFier and Metzger had two-hit games and three others recorded hits.
The Huskies will look to keep their three-game winning streak going when they return to action on Tuesday with a home game against Saint Thomas Aquinas College. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 PM.
