BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Longtime radio Bloomsburg University and high school radio greats Jim Doyle and Andy Ulicny earned the Fran Fisher Award for "Excellence in Sports Journalism" from the National Football Foundation's Central Pennsylvania Chapter last Sunday.
Doyle and Ulicny have been mainstays in the radio booth for the Bloomsburg football team for the last 33 years. The duo is also the voice of Berwick High School football. Both have earned the George Heaslip Award, presented annually by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) to one individual for excellence in media coverage. Doyle was honored by the PSAC as one of the top-10 contributors to the history of Bloomsburg University football.
"Andy and Jim are consummate professionals and true leaders in media," remarked director of athletics,
Dr. Michael McFarland. "We are so honored and pleased with all they bring to the table. We are very proud of their efforts and happy for this award."
Ulicny joined Doyle in the radio booth in 1988 as the color man while Doyle served as the play-by-play and analyst. The pair have called games for 13 PSAC championships teams, a PSAC title game, and numerous NCAA playoff games, including the Huskies, run to the national title game in 2000, the national semifinals in 2006, and the quarterfinals in 2008.
Their 33 years together in the booth is considered the record for longevity in the nation for all of college football. The pair's work has earned the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters (PAB) Award for outstanding coverage of local sporting events.
The Fran Fisher Award for Excellence in Sports Journalism was created in 2011 by the National Football Foundation's Central Pennsylvania Chapter to honor the most popular sportscaster in the history of Penn State and the Region. It is presented annually to an individual who exemplifies the character and professionalism of Fran Fisher as they promote the values and goals of amateur football while applying their craft.
Current Bloomsburg football fans can catch Doyle and Ulicny on 106.5 Bigfoot Country during the 2022 football season.
