BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's lacrosse comeback fell short as the Huskies dropped a 10-7 decision to the visiting Millersville University Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies tied the game midway through the fourth, but the Marauders hung on for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) win.
Â
With 9:04 to play in regulation and the Huskies trailing 6-5,
Kelsey Kilgallon (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) drew a foul just outside the critical scoring area and, on the restart, ripped a shot from just beyond the 8-meter line for the tying tally. The Marauders answered with their seventh goal of the season at the 5:44 mark and scored the eventual game-winner after winning the next draw and going straight to the cage.
Â
Millersville pushed its lead to 9-6 with 3:03 to play with a free-position goal from Rachel Keeney and took a 10-6 lead with 32 seconds to play.
Kelsey Clauss (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) scored the game's last goal as she found the back of the net on a free position shot with 13 seconds left to bring the score to its final, 10-7, in favor of Millersville.
Â
The Marauders opened the game with four unanswered goals in the first quarter. Bloomsburg got on the board early in the second quarter.
Amanda Stoll (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) scored her first of the game as she got a pass from behind the net from
Haley Williams (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and beat the goalie to cut the deficit to 4-1. Kilgallon scored her first of the game at the 9:24 mark to get to within two, 4-2. The Marauders answered with 4:14 to play to push their lead to 5-2 before Kilgallon scored her second with 2:59 to play before the break. The Marauders took a 5-3 lead into halftime.
Â
Each team found the back of the net once in the third quarter as Millersville clung to a 6-4 lead with 15 minutes to play.
Â
Stoll won the opening draw of the fourth quarter and went straight to cage and, after beating one defender, ripped a shot to the far top corner to cut the lead to 6-5 and set up Kilgallon's game-tying goal. The comeback fell just short, however.
Â
Millersville out-shot Bloomsburg 28-19 while the Huskies held a slight 11-10 advantage in draw controls.
Â
Kilgallon finished the day with three goals and is now just four points shy of 100 for her career. Clauss and Stoll scored twice for the Huskies, while Williams dished out the only Husky assist. Stoll finished the day with a team-best seven draw controls.
Â
Erika Biehl (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) led the Huskies with five caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls.
Erin Gingrich (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and
Cassidy Griffin (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) had three ground balls.
Â
Lauren Foley (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) finished the day with 10 saves and one ground ball in the net for Bloomsburg.
On Friday, the Huskies return to action when they host Mercy College in a 3:00 pm non-conference contest at Steph Pettit Stadium.
