WILSON, NC - Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bloomsburg University baseball team posted seven runs and added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning to pull out an 11-3 victory over Fairmont State on Sunday at the Wilson Tobs Tournament in Wilson, N.C.
The rally got started when
Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area)Â hit a two-run homer to right field to give the Huskies their first lead of the contest. Then, Bloomsburg was able to capitalize with runners in scoring position as
Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson)Â was able to hit a runner in with a bases-loaded single and
Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) knocked in a runner when he grounded into a double play.
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech)Â drove in the fifth run of the inning on a single that scoredÂ
Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton)Â and
Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) capped off the rally with a two-run double. Newbert scored the team's first two runs of the game on a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Bloomsburg then added two runs in the eighth as
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) hit a solo home run and
Jake Reed (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) recorded a sacrifice fly that scored Newbert.
The productive day at the plate resulted in Bloomsburg's second consecutive game with at least 10 hits as the team recorded 11 against Wilmington University (Del.) on Saturday night. Leading the way for the Huskies against Fairmont State was Viggiano and Newbert, who both had two hits, a home run and scored runs during the contest. Newbert finished 2-4 with two RBI, three runs scored and a walk. Viggiano was 2-3 with one RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Gibble was the third Husky with two hits as he finished 2-3 with a double and one RBI on his bases-loaded single. Chasanov, Burcin, OFier and Porter - who entered the game for
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) following an injury - all had one hit apiece.Â
On the mound, Kolby Burrow picked up the win as he pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in relief. The 6-0, 185-pound sophomore struck out four hitters and allowed just one hit.
Brandon Walters (York, Pa./Central York) tossed one scoreless inning and
Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), who started the contest, threw 4.2 innings.
The comeback victory caps off a four-game stretch that saw the Huskies go 2-2 over the course of the weekend. The Huskies opened up the tournament with a tight 2-1 loss to Wilmington on Friday, then turned around to split games with Fairmont State (W, 6-5) and the Wildcats (L, 10-7) on Saturday. Bloomsburg's offense was rolling in the past two games as it totaled 21 hits, three home runs, nine doubles and 18 runs batted in during the team's last 17 innings of play.
Bloomsburg's win on Sunday improves its overall record to 7-4 and the team will open up conference play with their next game, which is at Shippensburg University on Friday, March 11. The series will then continue on Saturday when the Huskies host the Raiders for a home doubleheader at Danny Litwhiler Field. Â
