Softball Sweeps UPJ In Home Opener

BLOOMSBURG, PA - The Bloomsburg University softball team outscored Pitt-Johnstown 14-3 between the two games of the doubleheader in their home opener. The Huskies took the first game 4-1 in 7 innings before completing the sweep with a 10-2 victory in just five innings.

In the opening game, the Mountain Cats got things started with a run in the third inning after Kayla Miehl hit a single with bases loaded and sent her teammate, Olivia Porter, home for their only run scored in the first game. The Huskies responded quickly as Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) doubled on a line drive to center field and drove Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) and Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) home to give the Huskies the 2-1 lead. A wild pitch brought home Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the Huskies' lead to 3-1 before Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) reached on a fielder's choice that ended the scoring threat.

The Huskies' final run of the first game came as Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) scored after Culp singled out to center with runners on the corners.

Culp closed out the first game 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run, while Star, DelPierre, and Lenner all added one run for the Huskies.

The Huskies carried the momentum into the second game as Starr scored after DelPierre hit a single to shortstop. Pitt-Johnstown once again scored its first run in the third inning after Mendicino hit a sac fly out to right field to bring Julia Mooney home.

The Huskies retaliated with nine additional runs scored in the bottom of the third to advance the Huskies to a 10-1 lead over the Mountain Cats.

Ray broke the tie with the first run of the nine-run third as she singled through the right side and brought home Lenner. DelPierre perfectly positioned a ground ball down the baseline to left field to send Starr home and extend the Huskies' lead to 3-1. Little grabbed 2 RBIs off of a ground ball out to left field, bringing DelPierre and Ray home before Lenner singled to bring home Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh). Starr extended the Huskies' lead to 8-1 with a two-run double to left, and Ray broke open the game with a two-run single through the right side to give the Huskies a 10-1 lead.

The Mountain Cats got one run back in the fourth thanks to a home run from Tori Radvan, but Kelley Eberly got the final six outs in the circle to close out her second win of the season.

Freshman pitcher Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) impressed in her first home game as a Husky as she allowed just six hits in the first game and improved to 6-3. Eberly nabbed the win in her first home game, only allowing five hits, two runs, and one walk for her second win of the season.

Star led the Huskies in the second game going 2-for-2 with two RBI and three runs. Lenner finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs.

With the sweep, the Huskies even their record to 10-10 while the Mountain Cats drop to 10-9 overall.

The Huskies are on the road tomorrow, April 3rd, for a 1:00 pm doubleheader against Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA.
