Newbert Breaks Single-Season HR Record, But Huskies fall to Mounties In Extras

CORNING, N.Y. - Bloomsburg's Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) broke the single-season home run record with a go-ahead homer in the fourth inning against Mansfield on Friday, but a two-run eighth inning by the Mounties forced extra innings and the home team was able to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning on a two-out RBI single to give them a 6-5 victory.

Newbert's home run is his 17th of the season, which breaks Ryan Kirman's record of 16 that was set during the 2016 season. His three-run blast in the fourth inning gave the Huskies their first lead of the game at 4-2, but the game would be far from over.

An RBI single in the bottom of the fifth by Mansfield's Ben Osborne would cut the deficit in half, but Bloomsburg would get that run back in the top of the sixth when Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) scored on a sacrifice fly that was hit by Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech). Following 2.5 scoreless innings of play, Mansfield was able to get two runners in scoring position with two outs, and Josh Farina tied things up at 5-5 with a two-run single. After four scoreless innings, Osborne came up clutch for Mansfield as he knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 13th on a single up the middle.

Newbert finished the game 3-for-6 and with a double and single to go along with his three-run HR. Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), Chasanov and Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) all had two-hit games and three more players had singles to give the Huskies a total of 12 in the contest. Chasanov was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Viggiano was 2-for-6 with an RBI and run scored. Gates singled and hit his first triple of the season while scoring once. OFier scored twice and had a single. Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also singled and Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) had a base hit in his only at bat.

After Mansfield tied things up in the eighth, the next four innings were scoreless, but it was still full of action.

In the top of the 11th, Bloomsburg got a shot to break the tie when Jared Burcin (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) delivered back-to-back two-out singles. Burcin was able to get to third on Gibble's hit, but a fielder's choice in the next-at bat ended the Huskies' threat.

In the bottom-half of the inning, Mansfield got their first two hitters on base to put the game-winning run on second with no outs. But in the next at-bat, Bloomsburg pitcher Quinn Holt (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) drew a ground ball to OFier at first base, and he was able to turn a heads-up double play. Another groundout ended then ended the inning for Holt as he pitched out of the jam.

Mansfield then threatened again in the bottom of the 12th when they got a one-out infield single. Bloomsburg pitcher Duke Stafursky (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) sturck out the next hitter, but a pair of wild pitchers in the following at-bat put the game-winning run on third. In the 10-pitch at-bat, Stafursky struck out Ryan Verbonitz to strand the winning run.

Following a one-two-three inning in the top of the 13th, Mansfield had three singles in the bottom-half, which included the game-winning hit by Osborne with two outs.

The 13-inning loss in Corning, New York starts a home-and-away series between the two teams, who will be back in action on Saturday. Bloomsburg (20-14-1, 10-5-1 PSAC) hosts Mansfield (16-18, 8-7 PSAC) for a doubleheader that will begin at 12:00 PM.
