Baseball Tops Division Leader Millersville, 8-4

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University baseball team beat division leader Millersville in the first game of their three-game series by topping the Marauders 8-4 on Friday.

The Huskies got out to a quick 4-0 lead after two innings of play, then a three-run home run in the top of the fifth by Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) gave the squad a 7-0 lead. Millersville got one run back in the bottom of the fifth and then cut into the lead again in the seventh with a three-run frame to make it 7-4, but Bloomsburg regained a four-run lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech). Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) then was able to close out the final two innings on the mound for the Huskies to end the game at 8-4.

Viggiano led the Huskies at the plate with four runs batted in and a double to go along with his three-run homer. Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) and Adam Gates (Swedesboro, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) also doubled. Gates scored twice and was 2-for-5. Chasanov was also 2-for-5 with one RBI. Ben Newbert (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Harriton) homered in the first inning to give the Huskies their first lead of the game. Newbert is now tied with fellow teammate Kyle OFier (Pittston Township, Pa./Pittston Area) as the all-time leader in career home runs with 43.

On the mound, Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) picked up his ninth win of the season after tossing six innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits. The right-hander recorded five strikeouts in his outing and walked one. Vernieri threw 2.2 scoreless innings and struck out two.

Marshman also climbed to the No. 5 spot on the all-time career strikeouts list on Friday. He entered the game tied with Matt Bennecoff for sixth place with 160 strikeouts. Ashton Raines is the all-time leader with 197 strikeouts.

The victory makes Bloomsburg (22-16-1, 11-7-1 PSAC) the No. 4 team in the PSAC East, which is right behind a three-way tie for first place. West Chester (25-9, 13-6 PSAC), Millersville (32-12, 13-6 PSAC) and Shippensburg (23-20, 13-6 PSAC) are all tied for the top spot in the conference.

The Huskies will get the chance to climb in the conference standings again on Saturday when the team hosts Millersville for a doubleheader at Danny Litwhiler Field. The games are part of Autism Awareness Day and scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM.
