Softball Wins Game 2 In Extras To Sweep Millersviille

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University softball team swept Millersville in an away doubleheader on Friday. The Huskies blanked the Marauders 4-0 in the first game and then held on for a 6-3 win in extra innings after scoring three runs in the top of the ninth.

In the first game, freshman pitcher Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) tossed a one-hitter and threw all seven innings while striking out 14 batters. One run would've been enough with Sowers on the mound, but Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) gave the Huskies an early 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the second inning. Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) had an RBI single in the third and Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) gave the team another insurance run in the sixth by knocking in Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) on an RBI single.

Little, Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) and Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) all had two hits in the contest. Four more players had singles to give the team a total of 10 hits.

The second game saw the Huskies outhit the Marauders 15-4, but Millersville was able to score when it needed to in order to keep the game alive. Bloomsburg got out to a two-run lead in the fourth after scoring runs on a pair of RBI singles by Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) and Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High School). The game remained scoreless over the next three innings, but Millersville tied things up with one swing of the bat as a two-run double by Aleese Angelo knotted things up at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

Bloomsburg took the lead again in the top of the eighth after Lenner delivered a clutch RBI single to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead, but Millersville scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom-half of the inning to tie things back up. In the ninth, Culp broke things open for Bloomsburg as she hit a two-run single to give the Huskies a 5-3 lead. Wetzler then padded the lead with an RBI double, and Sowers sat down the side in order to pick up her second victory of the day.

In Game 2, Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had a team-high three hits as she went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Ray, Iseminger, Barnes, Culp and Wetzler all had two hits while Lenner and Little added one each.

Sowers picked up the win after throwing 3.2 innings in relief and allowing one earned run. Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) threw 5.1 scoreless innings and struck out eight as the starting pitcher for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg (23-16, 8-6 PSAC) is currently tied for third in the PSAC East and has an identical 8-6 conference record with East Stroudsburg and Shepherd.

The Huskies will host East Stroudsburg (33-7, 8-6 PSAC) on Saturday for a doubleheader with playoff implications on the line. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM at Jan. M. Hutchinson Field.
