Softball Sweeps Bloomfield In Doubleheader

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Bloomsburg University softball team swept Bloomfield University by a combined score of 23-5 between the two games of the doubleheader for their second home game of the season. The Huskies took the first game 11-3 in just five innings before completing the sweep with a 12-2 victory.

Senior Nicolette Ray (Abington, Pa./Abington) started the game off strong for the Huskies as she collected her fifth homer of the season by sending the ball over the left field fence. Ray also picked up an RBI off her homer as she drove Kayleigh Lenner (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) home to give the Huskies the early 2-0 lead.

The Huskies kept the ball rolling as they posted five additional runs in the second inning. Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) doubled down the right field line to give Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) the opportunity to run home for a 3-0 lead. Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) followed Culp with a double to left center and Culp was able to find home plate for the fourth run of the game. The Huskies took the lead to 5-0 as Lenner singled up the middle and collected an RBI as Little was able to round home. Erin DelPierre (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a perfectly positioned single to allow all three baserunners to advance and sent Sammi Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick Area) home for a 6-0 game. The Huskies collected their final run of the inning as Barnes was hit by a pitch, which scored Ray from third for a 7-0 lead.

Alexis Wetzler (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High School) took the Huskies to 8-0 in the bottom of the third off a single base hit by Starr. The final two runs of the inning came off a wild pitch that pushed Lenner home and advanced Starr to third base. In a perfect scoring position, pitcher Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) singled, safely sending Starr home.

Bloomfield had hopes in their sights as they collected three runs in the top of the fourth but that was not enough to keep the Huskies at bay, as Paige Thomas (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) sent one over the fence for her third home run of the season and advanced the Huskies to a final score of 11-3. Bloomfield was unable to score in the top of the fifth and the Huskies grabbed the first win.

Lenner led the Huskies in the second game going 3-for-3 and Barnes finished out the game 2-for-3 with one RBI.

The Huskies kept the momentum going as Danielle Barnes (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern Lehigh) collected her 15th RBI of the season in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch that walked Lenner home for the early 1-0 lead. Culp wasted no time getting in the action as she hit a single line drive to left field that advanced the base runners and drove Alex Iseminger (Everett, Pa./Everett Area) home. Little earned two RBIs off a single to second base and Barnes and Iseminger extended the lead to 4-0.

Bloomfield was able to get on the board in the second inning off a single to left field by Daniela Vidal that allowed her teammate, Danielle Walters, to score their first run of the game.

Freshman pitcher Kelly Eberly (Purcellville, Va/Homeschooled) was able to hold off Bloomfield and the Bears were unable to score. In the bottom of the third, Ray hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to push Starr to third and Lenner was able to bring the Huskies to a 9-1 lead over Bloomfield. Starr quickly made it home as Iseminger doubled down the left field line and the Huskies scored their 10th run of the game.

Bloomfield was able to get on the board one last time off an error by Huskies center fielder that gave Walters her second run of the game. The Huskies closed out the game with Thomas' second homer of the day as she and Barnes picked up the last two runs of the game for a final score of 12-2.

Freshman pitcher Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) continues to impress as she allowed just four hits and three runs in the first game and improved to 8-3. Kelley Eberly nabbed the win in the second game, only allowing eight hits, two runs, and one walk for her fourth win of the season.

Lenner led the Huskies throughout the doubleheader, going 3-for-3 in the first game and 3-for-3 in game two. Starr finished out game one going 3-for-2 and one RBI and Barnes finished out the game 2-for-3 with one RBI.

With the sweep, the Huskies advance their record to 14-10 while the Bears drop to 7-18.

The Huskies get back into action Friday, April 8th as they host Shepherd University for a 2:30 pm doubleheader at Jan M. Hutchinson Field.
