Men's Soccer Improves to 2-0 As Huskies Down Lightning 3-1

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the early season after beating Goldey-Beacom 3-1 in a non-conference matchup Wednesday evening at Steph Pettit Stadium.

The Huskies (2-0, 0-0 PSAC East) had a number of scoring opportunities throughout the contest as they outshot the Lightning (0-3, 0-0 CACC) by a final tally of 22-5, and it was freshman Kody Besser (Lacey Township, N.J./Lacey Township) who scored the first goal of the contest to give Bloomsburg a 1-0 lead with just under 20 minutest to go in the opening half. Besser recorded the first goal of the game by striking a loose ball in the box that he corralled from a header that was sent his way by Patrick Walsh (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus).

The momentum swing was not long-lived, however, as the Lightning took advantage of a corner kick and tied things back up at 1-1 less than two minutes later. Goldey-Beacom's Oliver Person sent a clean cross from the corner to the far post and Nick Perez was able to head the ball into the back of the net for the equalizer.

In the second half, Bloomsburg's offense started off hot as it took three shots within the first eight minutes and looked poised to retake the lead. Then on a corner kick nine minutes into the half, the Huskies did just that by mimicking the previous score by the Lightning. On a corner kick, Olly Whitham (Clitheroe, Lancashire, England/Settle College) sent a long lob pass towards the far post that Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) was able to strike with a clean header to score the go-ahead goal.

The rest of the half was dominated by Huskies' offense, who outshot the Lightning 12-3 in the frame. Bloomsburg's Sammy Ames (Holly Ridge, N.C./Dixon) then added the exclamation point to the victory when he scored a crafty goal with under three minutes to play. Ames' second goal of the season was a one-man effort as he skipped the ball over a defender to gain possession, then split two defenders to find himself in a one-on-one situation with the goalie in the box, which he took advantage of by scoring with quick kick that slid went by the Lightning goalkeeper.

The Huskies defensive effort was anchored by some solid play in the backline as well as some strong play from starting goalkeeper Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area). Rimple finished the contest with three saves.

Bloomsburg will return to action Thursday evening with another home non-conference matchup. This time, the Huskies will host Caldwell (0-2, 0-0 CACC) at 7:30 PM.
