MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team opened its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title defense with a 1-0 win over Mansfield University Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies remain perfect, 3-0, on the season and 1-0 in PSAC play, while the Mounties suffer their first loss of the year and drop to 1-1 and 0-1 in conference action.
The Huskies out-shot the Mounties 20-4 on the day and held a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal, needing just one strike for the victory.
Sophomore
Ellie Rowe (Hetlerville, Pa./Central Columbia) got the ball deep in the Huskies' defensive end and dribbled in through the Mountie midfield and down the far sideline before serving a low pass to senior
Paige Harris (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) on her right foot. After winning the ball off a defender's foot, Harris took a hard shot right in front of the net to get the ball under the Mountie goalie in the left corner in the 25th minute.
Neither team got a shot on net for the rest of the half, and the Huskies settled for the 1-0 lead at the break.
Just three minutes into the second half, junior
Lauren Bull (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) tried to push the lead to 2-0, but her shot went just to the left of the goal, and Harris' shot just nine minutes later went high.
The Huskies had their final scoring chance of the game as
Lorelei Hartzfeld's (Mount Wolf, Pa./Northeastern) shot low in front of the net was stopped by the Mounties' keeper, Samantha Merklin.
Bloomsburg's defense and senior keeper
Riley Spingler (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) earned their second shutout of the season as the Huskies kept the Mounties scoreless and without a clean shot on net.
The Huskies held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Bloomsburg looks to carry the early season momentum into Saturday's PSAC East matchup with West Chester University. The Golden Rams visit Steph Pettit Stadium on September 3 for a 5:00 p.m. tilt.
