Football Powers Their Way to a 42-3 Win Over Clarion

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Freshman quarterback KJ Riley (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) played like a seasoned veteran as he led the Bloomsburg University football team to an impressive 42-3 win over Clarion at Redman Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Huskies improved to 1-1 on the year while the Golden Eagles fell to 0-2.

Riley was as efficient as any coach would want his signal caller as he went 11-for-13 for 258 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 64 yards on six carries and another score. Riley found seven different targets in three quarters of action.

Junior quarterback David LePoidevin (Middlesex, N.J./Bound Brook) took over play-calling duties for most of the fourth quarter and went 3-for-3 with 25 yards and a three-yard scramble for a touchdown.

Sophomore Kaleb Monaco (Pocono Pines, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) continues to impress in his second season with the Huskies as he picked up 62 yards on the ground on 11 carries and caught a 62-yard pass for a touchdown. Sophomore Jerry Griffen-Batchler caught four passes for 49 yards, while Owen Anderson (Cogan Station, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) had three catches for 48 yards and a score. Matthew Bowes (Somerton, Pa./La Salle College HS) caught three passes for 41 yards and a touchdown. Tyshaun Pollard (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and Nas Jones (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) each had a touchdown catch, with Pollard pulling in a 40-yard catch and run for the score and Jones catching a 34-yard touchdown pass.

The Huskies won the coin toss and elected to kick off to open the game. Freshman kicker Kevin Carrigan (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) kicked the ball in the endzone, Alleyne Corahn returned it for 21 yards, and the Golden Eagles started the game at their own 21. After a pair of five-yard rushes to get a first down, the Husky defense went to work and forced a punt four plays later.

The Huskies and Golden Eagles traded short possessions before the Huskies opened up a scoring flurry. Starting at the Clarion 34-yard line, Riley hit Jones in the center of the field for a 34-yard catch-and-run as he danced into the endzone for the 6-0 Husky lead on the drive's first play. Freshman Brendan McGonigle (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) connected on the point after attempt, and the Huskies led 7-0 with 7:55 to play in the quarter.

The Golden Eagles didn't get past midfield on their next drive, and Bloomsburg capitalized by starting at their 30-yard line. Monaco pushed the pile forward with a pair of runs before Riley hit John Mack (Minisink Valley, N.Y./Minisink Valley) for a nine-yard catch and a first down. Riley's offensive line forced a gap for him to take off, and he ran for 57 yards to find the endzone and give the Huskies a 14-0 lead after another McGonigle extra point.

It was all Huskies from that point forward as the next Clarion drive stalled out at the Bloomsburg-38, and the Huskies took over on downs to start the second quarter. A Bloomsburg fumble gave the ball back to Clarion, but deep in their territory, Bloomsburg forced a 3-and-out on the ensuing drive.

Facing a 3rd-and-4 from their own 26, Riley found an open Anderson for 34 yards for a Husky first down at the Clarion-40. After four-straight rushes to eat the clock and move the chains, Riley found Bowes this time for the touchdown pass, a five-yard catch with 7:39 to play in the half. McGonigle's third PAT gave the Huskies a 21-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles had one of the best scoring opportunities on their next drive as they went 50 yards on eight plays to get to the Bloom-28. Trent McDowell's 45-yard attempt missed low, and the Huskies kept their shutout alive.

Neither team could find the endzone in the final 2:31 of the half, and Bloomsburg led 21-0 with 30 minutes to play.

The Huskies received the opening kickoff and immediately marched down the field for 75-yards and a Riley to Pollard 40-yard touchdown. McGonigle's extra point was blocked, but the recovery was fumbled in the field of play by Clarion and recovered by the Golden Eagles in the endzone for the untraditional one-point safety and the 28-0 Bloomsburg lead.

The Golden Eagles failed to score on their next drive, and the Huskies needed just two plays, a five-yard rush from Riley and a 62-yard catch and a run from Riley to Monaco, to extend their lead to 35-0 after McGonigle's extra point.

Clarion finally got on the board with 40 seconds to play in the fourth as the Golden Eagles went from their own 28-yard line to the Huskies' seven-yard line, and McDowell connected on a 24-yard field goal to cut the lead to 35-3.

The Huskies put the finishing touches on an impressive game as they used six and half minutes of gameplay and went 81 yards, capped by one yard run by LePoidevin to give the home team a 42-3 win.

Adam Burkhart (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led the Huskies with eight tackles, and Quentin Gaskill (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) finished with six and two broken-up passes.

The Huskies hit the road for the first time in 2022 when they travel to Edinboro next Saturday, September 17, for their final non-conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for 12:00 pm against the Fighting Scots.
