Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker To Pace in Overtime

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 decision in overtime to Pace University Friday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 2-3 on the year while the Setters improved to 3-2.

After another scoreless first half for the Huskies, Bloomsburg broke the scoreless tie as Morgan Magditch (Kintersville, Pa./Palisades) found the back of the cage for the first time in her career at Bloomsburg. Playing in her first game of the season, Magditch subbed in just past midway through the third quarter. With 3:34 to play in the quarter, Bri Doebler (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) had a perfect insert on a penalty corner to Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin), who was waiting at the top of the circle. After corralling the pass and evading a defender, Culp passed the ball to Magditch, who was positioned perfectly at the corner of the cage, and Magditch tucked the ball into the blindside of the goalie for the 1-0 Bloomsburg lead.

Sophomore Aydan McFarland's (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) final shot of the quarter went just wide, and the Huskies carried a 1-0 lead into the last period.

The Setters tied the game early into the fourth quarter as Eveline Bussemaker scored off a Sydney Sims pass just 3:12 into the period.

The Huskies had a great scoring opportunity with less than five minutes to play as freshmen Jessica Serafin (Worcester, Pa./Methacton) and Kate Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) each got a shot on cage, but Alina Buerger made a pair of saves, and the game headed into overtime.

The Setters just needed 48 seconds to claim the 2-1 win as Tavia Flecksteiner scored on the second shot of the extra time.

For the game, Pace out-shot the Huskies 16-11, including owning an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalie Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made nine saves for the Huskies, while Buerger made four stops for Pace.

The two teams were even in penalty corners with six each.

McFarland led the Huskies with four shots while Emily Swineford (Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had two.

The Huskies return to action on Sunday as they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas College for a non-conference match-up at 1:00 pm.
