Two 1st Quarter Goals Lead Field Hockey to 2-0 Win Over Frostburg State

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Two goals in the first quarter sparked the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 2-0 win over Frostburg State at Steph Pettit Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Meghan Longenhagen (Catawissa, Pa./Southern Columbia) scored the first goal of the game seven minutes into the contest after receiving a sharp pass in the inner circle by Emily Swineford (Mt. Pleasant Mills, Pa./Selinsgrove Area). Less than 40 seconds later, Bri Doebler (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) extended the Huskies' lead to 2-0 when she lasered a shot into the goal for the team's second score of the day. Doebler's shot was assisted by Madeline Newman (Lehman, Pa./Lake-Lehman)

The Huskies offense played methodically as they created several more scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the contest and finished with 13 total shots on goal, nine of which were on goal.

Longenhagen led the team with three shots on goal while Doebler and Meg Barnard (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) had one apiece. Kate Ferguson (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) and Carlee Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) also had shots on goal.

Frostburg State kept up with Bloomsburg offensively and finished the game with a total of 13 shots and nine of them were on target. Huskies goalie Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) played a huge part in holding the Bobcats scoreless, however, finishing the game with nine saves while anchoring Bloomsburg's defense.

The shutout win for Bloomsburg is their third of the season and the victory is the team's second straight.

The Huskies will look to win their third straight on Tuesday when they travel to Mercyhurst. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
