Field Hockey Falls to Newberry 2-1 in Overtime

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Bloomsburg University field hockey team suffered a tough 2-1 loss in overtime to Newberry College Saturday afternoon. The Huskies dropped to 1-1 for the year while the Wolves improved to 2-0.

Trailing 1-0 for most of the contest, sophomore Kara Koch (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) got her first goal of the season to tie the game 1-1 with 8:37 to play in regulation. Koch got a pass from sophomore Bella Culp (Dauphin, Pa./Central Dauphin) and shot it into the right corner of the cage to it up. The Wolves had a chance to avoid overtime with just over six to play with a penalty corner, but the Husky defense held firm and did not allow a shot.

Bloomsburg had a similar chance with 52 seconds to play in regulation but couldn't get a shot off, and the game headed into an extra period.

With just over 90 seconds to play in the first overtime, Newberry's Tamsin Bangert found her way through the defense and scored to hand the Wolves a hard-fought 2-1 win.

Bangert assisted on the game's first goal, a strike from Sanne Pronk just 2:45 into action following a penalty corner.

The Wolves out-shot the Huskies 11-8 and had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalie Abby Shaffer (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) had a strong day in the cage making eight stops for BU.

Kaitlyn Bucci (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Pittston Area) led the team with two shots, both on goal, while Sydney Derr (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) and Koch accounted for the other two shots on goal.

The Huskies play one final time in the South when they travel to Hartsville, S.C., to take on Coker University on Monday, September 5 at 11:00 a.m.
