GREENSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore guard
Matt Bengel (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) nearly matched his career high but the Bloomsburg men's basketball team fell to Seton Hill, 90-61, in the final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game on Saturday.
Bengel finished with 24 points, just one point shy of his career best, which he set against another PSAC West team, California (Pa.) on December 18. Bengel finished 11-for-21 from the field and was 2-for-6 from three-point range. He tied
Ash Kemble (Myerstown, Pa./Fork Union Military Academy) with seven rounds to lead the Huskies. Kemble also finished in double figures with 11 points behind a 5-for-11 day from the field and a 1-for-3 performance from the free throw line.
Sean Haus (Southampton,Pa./William Tennent) posted nine points and a pair of assists and two rebounds.
As a team, the Huskies shot 44.1% from the field (26-for-59) and were 5-for-18 from beyond the arc (27.8%).
Samuel Tabe led Seton Hill with 30 points while four Griffins finished in double figures. The Griffins were 38-for-66 (57.6%) from the field and 7-for-22 (31.8%) from beyond the arc. SHU was 7-for-10 from the free throw line. The Griffins narrowly edged the Huskies on the boards, finishing the game with a 36-33 advantage in rebounds.
Seton Hill converted its seven offensive boards into 13 points and scored 37 points off of the Huskies 21 turnovers.
Seton Hill raced out to a 17-10 lead in the first eight minutes of the first half, but Bloomsburg used a 7-0 run, which was bookended with a pair of jumpers from
Jake Nelson (West Chester, Pa./West Chester Rustin), to tie the game at 17-17 with 9:58 to play in the first. The Griffins went on a 9-0 run to take a 26-17 lead with 6:09 to play in the first and never looked back.
The Griffins took their largest lead of the first, a 13-point advantage, 38-25, at the 1:40 mark but Bengel hit a jumper with 48 seconds to play to cut the lead to 11, 38-27, at the break.
The Huskies couldn't get the lead under double digits for the rest of the contest and Seton Hill eventually took a 90-53 lead, 37-points, their largest, with 2:31 to play.
Haus had back-to-back threes to cut the deficit to 29, 90-61, with 1:08 to play.
Dylan Harris (Bloomsburg, Pa./Central Columbia) attempted a three with 43 seconds to play but couldn't get it to fall as Seton Hill won 90-61.
The Huskies return to action on Monday as they host PSAC East opponent Mansfield at Nelson Field House for a 5:30 pm contest on January 23.
