Seton Hill Rides First-Half Lead To 74-50 Win Over Women's Basketball

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team fell to Seton Hill during an away Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup by a final score of 74-50 Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies (5-10, 3-8 PSAC) went toe-to-toe with the Griffins (13-7, 6-5 PSAC) during the second half, but Bloomsburg fell behind by too much to mount a comeback after a tough first-half shooting performance that led to a 20-point Seton Hill lead at halftime. The Griffins were able to keep its double-digit advantage for the duration of the second half en route to the victory.

Bloomsburg was led in scoring by Kelly Leszcynski (Narareth, Pa./Nazareth), who finished with career-high 18 points after going 6-for-8 from three-point range. Lescynski added five rebounds and was tied for a team-high three assists.

Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) was a rebound away from a double-double as she scored 12 points and snagged nine rebounds.  Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) was second on the team in rebounds with seven to go along with five points and three assists. Julia Wheeler (Albion PA/Northwestern) was third on the team in scoring with seven points in 10 minutes.

For Seton Hill, Alie Seto led all scorers with 21 points and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Sakeria Haralson also had a double-double, scoring 12 points and recording 12 rebounds. Christiane Frye was the third and final Griffin in double figures, scoring 15 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds.

To open the game, the Huskies matched the scoring of Seton Hill as they trailed by just two points as the score was 13-11 after a layup by Starr with 3:31 left in the first quarter. Starr started off the game hot, scoring six of Bloomsburg's first 11 points. Though the game was tight at that point, Seton Hill closed out the quarter on a 6-0 scoring run to lead 19-11 after the opening period.

The second quarter proved to be the story of the game as it saw Seton Hill grab sole possession of the game. Picking up from where they left off on the scoring run to close out the first quarter, the Griffins continued their scoring run and outscored the Huskies 16-4 in the quarter to gain a 35-15 lead at halftime. Continuing its 6-0 scoring run from when the score was 13-11 with 3:31 left in the first quarter, Seton Hill ultimately went on a 22-2 scoring run until Gochnauer knocked down a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining in the second quarter for the final points of the first half.

A solid first-half defensive performance by Seton Hill limited Bloomsburg to a 26.1% (6-23 FG) shooting performance and a total of 15 points in the first 20 minutes. Meanwhile, Seton Hill went 14-30 (46.7%) from the floor, despite going 1-9 from three-point land.

In the second half, Bloomsburg shot better from the field but still went 34.4% (11-32) from the floor and scored a total of 35 points. Defensively, the Huskies held the Griffins to a 38.9% (14-36) shooting performance and total of 39 points as Bloomsburg matched Seton Hill's scoring pace.

Leszcynski provided Bloomsburg with a spark in the second half as she scored 15 of her team-high 18 points during that span. The freshman guard set her new career high by knocking down five of her six threes in the second half. Additionally, Wheeler scored all of her seven points in the second half, five of which came from the free-throw line.

Despite the team's solid play in the second half, the first-half deficit was too much too overcome as the Huskies ultimately fell, 74-50.

The Huskies will return to action with a home game against Mansfield (2-13, 1-10 PSAC) on Monday. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 PM inside the Nelson Field House after the men's game.
