General | 1/31/2023 1:37:00 PM

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg Athletics is set to celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day at a home men's and women's basketball doubleheader Wednesday, Feb. 1, inside the Nelson Field House.

The doubleheader will begin with the women's basketball game against Lock Haven at 5:30 PM. At halftime of the women's game, female student-athletes from several Bloomsburg athletic teams will be holding activities behind the north and south end bleachers for youth participants in attendance of the game. Further instructions for youth participants will be provided at the game. Admission is free for youth participants.

February 1, 2023 marks the 37th annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day, which began in 1987 as a day to unite organizations and female athletes to bring national attention to the promise of girls and women in sports. The day began as a remembrance of Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and dedication to promoting equity for women's sports. Hyman passed away in 1986 from Marfan syndrome.

Since the first celebration, National Girls & Women in Sports Day has evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.

Annually, schools and community-serving organizations host 300 events across the United States with an estimated reach of 200,000 girls and women.

The women's game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 PM, and the contest will be followed by a men's game at 7:30 PM. Both teams will be hosting Lock Haven.
