LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team played Lock Haven in a tightly contested Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game on Saturday, but a late fourth-quarter rally by the Bald Eagles lifted them to a 68-66 win over the Huskies.
Bloomsburg (2-9, 0-7 PSAC) led early and carried a 10-point lead into halftime thanks to a sharp shooting performance in the second quarter, which saw the Huskies go 8–13 (61.5%) from the floor. The squad then stretched their lead to 13 – its largest of the game - on the opening possession of the second half after a three-pointer by
Kelly Leszcynski (Narareth, Pa./Nazareth). Following Leszcynski's three, however, the Bald Eagles (6-6, 4-3 PSAC) would begin to chip away at their deficit and make a run of their own.
Lock Haven would go on to outscore Bloomsburg 26-17 in the third quarter to make it a 51-50 contest, in favor of the Huskies. Then in the fourth, both teams traded one-point leads in the early minutes of the final quarter until the Huskies went on a quick 5-0 scoring run to go up 64-59 with 2:52 left. Lock Haven made layups on its next two possessions and then an
Ella Kale (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) jump shot put Bloomsburg back on top by three with the score 66-63 at the 1:22 mark.
The Bald Ealges, however, regained the momentum as they tied it up on their next possession after a Brooke Lawyer three pointer. Bloomsburg turned the ball over on its next possession, and Lawyer was able to score the game-winning basket on the ensuing possession with seven seconds left in the contest. The Huskies had a chance to tie things up on the last possession of the game, but a contested shot in the paint by
Abby Brown (Phillipsburg, N.J./Bethlehem Catholic) was off the mark and Bloomsburg fell by a final score of 68-66.
Brown led the Huskies in scoring with 13 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. Leszcynski and
Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) each had 11 points, and Starr added seven rebounds.
Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) was the fourth and final Bloomsburg player in double figures as she finished with 10 points, four assists and two rebounds.
Ella Kale (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) had eight rebounds and six points while
Hailey Hudak (Schwenksville, PA/Spring Ford) had eight points in 18 minutes.
Lock Haven's Lawyer led all players with 24 points. Taylor Leidy was the only other player to finish with double-digits in the points column, totaling 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench.
Bloomsburg held the edge in the rebounding category, outrebounding Lock Haven 36-30. The Huskies also had more points in the paint, winning that statistic 32-26.
The Bald Eagles gained an advantage with 17 points off turnovers. Bloomsburg only had five points off turnovers.
Bloomsburg will return to the court with an away game at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday. The game is scheduled to tip off at 5:30 PM.
