Men's Soccer Draws With West Chester in Soaking Conditions

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's soccer team came away with a draw on a wet Saturday afternoon against West Chester, 2-2.

The Huskies tallied the first two goals of the match in the first half off the feet of Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Owen Hollobaugh (State College, Pa./State College) to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 advantage. In a hard-fought contest, the Golden Rams fought back to force a draw on their home field, cutting the deficit to one right before the end of the first half and tying the game with the only goal of the second half.

The numbers reflected the even matchup, with both sides registering 10 shots, five on goal, and five corners while both goalkeepers made three saves.

How It Happened:
Bloomsburg got the better of the early offensive opportunities and made several keen pushes in the final third. The Huskies struck first just inside the 20-minute mark from great counter-attacking play.

Sammy Ames (Holly Ridge, N.C./Dixon) received the ball along the left wing and drove into positive space before sending a through ball to center Schlee in front of goal for a right-footed finish.

Starting from a corner kick, the Huskies were able to generate their second goal thanks to maintained possession and pinpoint passing. The ensuing corner was knocked down and knocked around by Bloomsburg before landing outside the box at the feet of Braden Alicea (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland).

The defender sent a ball to the back post and connected with the head of Patrick Walsh (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus), nodding the ball to Hollobaugh for a tap-in goal in front of the net.

Before the break, West Chester answered with a goal from Andrew Markopoulos to cut the Huskies' lead to one before halftime.

The Golden Rams tied the contest at 2-2 with 15 minutes into the half with a goal from Frankie Taylor off a pass from Dillon Barbieri.

Bloomsburg had several chances in the following moments, with Schlee and Ames each forcing a save out of the West Chester goalkeeper. Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) made a keen save in the 76th minute to keep the game knotted up.

The final 24 minutes of play saw both teams attempt to make in-roads at goal, but neither side could find a last-minute decider.

On The Horizon:
Bloomsburg returns to Steph Pettit Stadium on Wednesday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. to take on Shepherd for a PSAC matchup.
