EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Juniors
Ryan D'Ambra (Southampton, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Tom Goetz (Wenonah, N.J./Gateway Regional) had career days on defense for the Bloomsburg football team, but the East Stroudsburg Warriors held off a late comeback to win, 21-16 Saturday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 1-7and 0-5 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East while the Warriors improved to 7-1 and 4-1 in conference play.
Â
D'Ambra led all defensive players with 17 tackles, including nine solo and eight assisted stops. The 17 tackles for the junior are a career-best as are the total solo and assisted tackles. D'Ambra's 17 tackles is the most for a Husky in a single game since Jarrett Pidgeon recorded 17 against Shippensburg on October 15, 2011. Goetz was equally as impressive with 15 total tackles between five solo stops and a career-best 10 assisted tackles. His 15 tackles and 10 assists are both career highs for Goetz. He had one sack for a loss of six yards. Goetz also got to the quarterback once on a hurry.
Senior
Quentin Gaskill (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) made a season-best 13 tackles between seven solo stops and six assists and had one tackle for a loss of two yards.
Â
Offensively,
Ben Ries (Bloomsbury, N.J./Phillipsburg) had a strong day under center for the Huskies as he went 18-for-28 for 215 yards and a touchdown.
Nas Jones (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) caught six of those passes for 56 yards while
Jaden Helton (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) made two catches for 52 yards, including a 43-yard catch.
Gabe Brower (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) had three catches for 49 yards and a 37-yard touchdown catch.
Â
Kaleb Monaco (Pocono Pines, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) ran for 49 yards on 11 carries while Ries ran it five times and got into the end zone once.
Â
The Warriors got on the board early with a 29-yard catch by Jonathan Post from Sean McTaggart with 11:38 to still play in the first quarter. ESU received the opening kickoff and went 75 yards on nine plays on the scoring drive.
After both teams were held scoreless for the rest of first and for most of the second until ESU took over on its own 49-yard line and went 51 yards on nine plays and used 4:10 to get into the end zone and lead 14-0.
Â
The Huskies immediately answered the scoring drive with one of their own. Bloomsburg began the drive on its own 26-yard line and Ries hot Helton for a 43-yard pass on the first play of the drive. After taking a sack for the loss of 11 yards, Ries handed the ball off to freshman
Matt Buchman (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton) who took it five yards down to the ESU-37. Facing a 3
rd-and-16, Ries found Brower in tight coverage but the junior wideout got just enough separation in the back of the end zone to catch the 37-yard touchdown pass.
Christopher George (Ashley, Pa./Hanover Area) hit the extra point and the Warriors' lead was cut in half, 14-7.
Â
Bloomsburg forced a punt on a three-and-out on the next Warrior and the Huskies ran out of the needed just one play to run out the clock in the half and get into the locker room.
Â
The Huskies got the ball to start the third quarter, but the Warriors picked off Ries on his second pass of the drive. The interception set up a scoring drive for the Warriors as they went 53-yards on four plays and DJ Thomson caught a pass from Dawson Stuart to give ESU a 21-7 lead.
Â
Just as they did in the previous quarter, the Huskies immediately answered the Warriors scoring drive with one of their own. Bloomsburg went 79 yards on 15 plays, including a 14-yard catch by
Jerry Griffen-Batchler (Norristown, Pa./Germantown Academy) and a 21-yard run from Monaco. Bloomsburg got down to the ESU one yard line but a false start pushed them back to the six and forced Bloomsburg to attempt a 23-yard field goal. George hit the field goal try and cut the ESU lead to 21-10 with 4:34 to play in the quarter.
Â
ESU got to midfield on its next drive but a QB hurry by
Joseph Kahn (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) on 3
rd-and-10 forced a Warrior punt to end the quarter.
Â
With 10:37 to play, Ries hit Jones for a four-yard pass before the Warrior defense got called for a pass interference on Brower for a fresh set of downs. After two plays that did not move the ball, Ries completed a shovel pass to
Ty Pringle (Cheyney, Pa./Bayard Rustin) for 10 yards to get a first down at the ESU-41. After a couple short yardage plays, Ries found Jones again, this time for 19 yards down to the ESU-19. Ries and Jones connected on back-to-back plays to get to the ESU-07. A couple short runs moved the ball down to the one-yard line. The Huskies did their best Philadelphia Eagles impression with a "Brotherly Shove" quarterback sneak to get Ries into the end zone. The Huskies elected to go for two but were well defended and Bloomsburg cut the ESU lead to 21-16.
Â
East Stroudsburg got the ball back with 5:29 to play and collected just enough first downs to run out the clock and hold on for the 21-16 win.
Â
The Huskies return to action next Saturday when they host Shepherd on October 28. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m. from Danny Hale Field at Redman Stadium.
