Men's Soccer Sails to Victory Over Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg men's soccer team secured a 2-1 victory against Shippensburg in PSAC action Saturday afternoon.

Alex Wilsterman (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) was the catalyst for the Huskies' (8-2-4, 6-1-3 PSAC East) play in the match, finishing the day with a goal and assist on the ledger. Wilsterman linked up with Kody Besser (Lacey Township, N.J./Lacey Township) and Owen Hollobaugh (State College, Pa./State College) to lead Bloomsburg to the win.

The Huskies have five players with at least four goals in consecutive seasons for the first time dating back to 2012.

How It Happened:
Fast starts and furious offensive pressure define Bloomsburg's recent run of form, and Saturday's contest was no different.

Within the first minute, the Huskies drove into the Shippensburg (4-7-2, 1-7-1 PSAC East) half to draw its first corner opportunity. With his left foot, Wilsterman sent an inswinging pass to the back post, where Besser laid out for a diving header and nodded it into the bottom right corner for an early 1-0 lead.

Bloomsburg pursued a second goal early on, forcing three saves out of Raiders goalkeeper Ryan Glenlast 10 minutes after the opening score. The Huskies sat on their lead, biding their time for another goal-scoring opportunity, yet despite two more shots on goal and saves from Glenlast, the sides entered the halftime break with a 1-0 score.

The defense was stout in the opening 45 minutes for Bloomsburg, as Shippensburg could not put a shot on target.

The Raiders responded to the first-half deficit by tying the match just over a minute into the second half with a combination play from Henry and Clark to tie the game at 1-1.

The two sides traded free kicks in the succeeding minutes before Bloomsburg nabbed its second goal of the afternoon off the left foot of Wilsterman. The Huskies controlled the ball past midfield, showcasing tremendous link-up play between the players. Hollobaugh lofted a through ball over the defense to a striding Wilsterman, where the senior collected the ball and tucked it away into the bottom left corner for the lead.

After the first shot on target found the back of the net, Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) settled into the match to make two important saves for Bloomsburg after missing the previous match. The Huskies maintained their play in the final minutes, forcing two more saves from the home side to ice the match.

Hollobaugh and Wilsterman have each used a great run of form to elevate the Bloomsburg attack in recent weeks. Hollobaugh is the Huskies' leading scorer, registering a point each of the last five matches for a total of four goals and two assists (10 points). Integral to the midfield, Wilsterman has tallied three goals and two assists (8 points) in the same span. Besser has contributed to Bloomsburg's immense success on set pieces, with three goals in his last five coming from dead-ball opportunities.

Bloomsburg is again on the road for a conference contest, facing Lock Haven at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25.
