Volleyball Drops Match With East Stroudsburg in Straight Sets

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg volleyball team fell in straight sets against the current top team in the PSAC East, East Stroudsburg, Saturday evening.

The Huskies move to 8-15 on the year with a 4-6 mark against PSAC East foes as the Warriors capture their 15th consecutive victory, moving to 18-5 on the season and 10-0 in conference action.

Marlee Johnson (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) was a bright spot for the Bloomsburg attack, hitting .278 and ending the night with a team-high six kills. Shayna Warfel (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) matched Johnson's six kills, while Emily Jackson (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) led the Huskies in blocks for the second consecutive night, finishing with four.

How It Happened:
The first set was the most tightly contested between the two sides but favored East Stroudsburg in the end as the Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead.

The visitors jumped to an early 4-0 lead with three service aces in the first four points. Bloomsburg began to work its way back into the opening frame with five points from five different players to cut the deficit to 7-5. As the two teams traded points, neither side was willing to waiver as the East Stroudsburg lead grew to eight at 23-15.

The Huskies displayed tremendous resiliency in the following run, starting with a kill by Jenna Dubosky (Summit Hill, Pa./Panther Valley). Liz Bopp (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) parlayed that spurt of momentum into a service ace as Jackson and Johnson combined for blocks on back-to-back points. The Warriors closed out the set with one of her match-leading 15 kills.

East Stroudsburg leveraged its early momentum into the second set for a 2-0 advantage on the night. The Warriors captured 14 of the first 16 points to begin the second frame before a 3-0 run play highlighted by outstanding effort stalled the visitors' march to claim the set. The Huskies' attempts were not enough to prevent East Stroudsburg's potent second-set offense.

Needing a spark, Bloomsburg turned to several players for defensive support. Dollie Byrd (Buford, Ga./Lanier) saw her first action of the season, recording a career-high six digs and two assists in the match. Hannah Au (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) and Julia Holmes (Elkton, Md./Bohemia Manor) also saw extended time in the match for their defensive efforts, finishing with five and three digs, respectively.

In the end, the Huskies' efforts were not enough to overcome the surging Warriors, falling in the third set 25-16.

Tayla Miller (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte) recorded her 300th career dig in the effort Saturday evening. Elise Adelman (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) moved into a tie for the fifth most service aces in a season with 35.

On The Horizon:
The Huskies are back at Nelson Field House on Friday, November 3, at 6:00 p.m. to take on Shepherd in PSAC action.
