RINDGE, N. H. – The Bloomsburg men's soccer team fell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday evening against No. 1 seed Franklin Pierce, 3-0.
Â
The Huskies surrendered all three allowed goals in the first half and had the team in a hole it could not work out of. The shot advantage favored the Ravens in the end, 16-14, as did the edge in corners at 5-3.
How It Happened:
The pressure was on Bloomsburg early as Franklin Pierce looked to control the ball early and often.
Brady Rimple (Cherryville, Pa./Northampton Area) was active early in the match, making his first save of the night inside two minutes. After several follow-up opportunities from the Ravens, the Huskies got a good look from an early set piece.Â
Stephen Hollis (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) whipped in a ball to the back post that reached the feet of
Anthony Schlee (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley), but the junior could not square the ball well enough to put a solid attempt on net.
Owen Hollobaugh (State College, Pa./State College) had Bloomsburg's next chance after an errant pass from Franklin Pierce allowed him to drive forward, but he could not convert in front of goal.Â
The Ravens made a fervent push for the first goal and finally broke through after a pair of saves from Rimple. Franklin Pierce quickly doubled its advantage a few moments later in the 26th minute.Â
Rimple once again was called into action after the Ravens drew a penalty. The senior goalkeeper correctly guessed and dove right to redirect the shot out of play. Franklin Pierce would find its third goal before the end of the half to take a commanding lead into the second half of the game.Â
The Huskies were not deterred from the deficit and came into the final 45 minutes in search of a goal. Hollobaugh had the first crack of goal for either side as the two teams traded attempts. Schlee forced the Raven's goalkeeper to come forward as
Alex Wilsterman (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) had a header on net cleared off the line at the last moment.Â
Schlee again looked to put Bloomsburg on the board with another two shots that did not find their way as Hollis had a corner off a corner that just sailed high.
Brayden Ahlum (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) had one last chance for the Huskies in the final moments of the game.Â
The Huskies had their opportunities but in the end, were unable to mount the comeback effort. Bloomsburg's postseason ends, marking another set of milestones and achievements for the program.
