Women's Basketball Falls to Chestnut Hill 62-58, In Back-And-Forth Contest

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team dropped a back-and-forth thriller to Chestnut Hill, 62-58, Saturday afternoon. Junior Katie Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) finished the day with her second double-double of the season. The Huskies dropped to 1-3 on the year while the Griffins improved to 2-2.
 
The lead changed hands 12 times after the game was tied four times. Starr finished the day with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Huskies while Ella Kale (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) added 11 points and a team-best four assists. Allison Hileman (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) grabbed five rebounds and five points.
 
With 6:01 to play in the first quarter, the Griffins were holding on to a 7-6 lead before Starr hit a layup to give Bloomsburg an 8-7 lead. The Huskies pushed their lead to three, 12-9, with 4:18 to play thanks to a fastbreak layup from Ava Stevenson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity). The Griffins tied the game at 12-12 before retaking the lead 15-12 with 2:40 to play. Chestnut Hill pushed the lead to five, 17-12, with 1:47 to go in the quarter. The Huskies closed out the quarter on an 8-3 run thanks to points from Kale, Starr, and Hailey Hudak (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring Ford), to tie the game at 20-20 after the first.
 
The Huskies built a four-point lead with two straight-jumpers from Starr to open the second before Chestnut Hill came battling back and took a six-point lead, 36-30, 3:25 to go before halftime. Bloomsburg cut the lead back to three, 36-33, with 2:31, but the Griffins closed out the half outscoring Bloomsburg 3-2 to take a 39-34 lead into the break.
 
Chestnut Hill out-scored Bloomsburg 12-10 in the third to building a 51-44 lead with 10 minutes to play in regulation.
 
Bridie McCann hit a three to open the fourth quarter and give Chestnut Hill a 10-point lead, 54-44. The Huskies chipped away at the lead and scored seven-straight points to cut the lead to one, 56-55, with 4:41 to play in the quarter thanks to a three from Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, Pa./Lower Dauphin). Over a minute later, Starr gave the lead back to Bloomsburg with a jumper in the paint off a Chestnut Hill turnover. Kaitlyn Carter finished a layup on the next Griffin possession to give the lead back to Chestnut Hill with 2:46 to play.
 
The Griffins held on to the lead for the rest of the contest after pushing their lead to three with a layup from Caleigh Edwards with 1:00 to play. A free throw from Kale cut the lead to two, 60-58, with just 15 seconds left. Griffins sealed the win with a layup on an in-bound play to take the game, 62-58.
 
The Huskies return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Holy Family University. The game is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
