JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team fell in a PSAC road contest to Pitt-Johnstown Monday evening, 77-56.
Katie Starr (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) led the charge for the Huskies with her third consecutive double-double and fifth overall this season. The forward finished the game with team-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds while recording multiple teams for the fifth time this season.Â
Leah Kale (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) was the other Bloomsburg player in double figures on the night, dropping 13 points to go with two steals.
The Huskies move to 3-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference action as the Mountain Cats improve to 7-2 overall with a 2-1 mark in PSAC play.
How It Happened:Â
Bloomsburg found itself in an early deficit and could not find a way back into the game. By the halfway point of the contest, the Huskies found themselves down nine thanks to six points from Starr. Pitt-Johnstown closed the opening quarter on a 10-3 run to cap off a 27-11 quarter favoring the home side.
The scoring slowed through the first 90 seconds of the second quarter before the Mountain Cats added to their tally.
Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, Pa./Lower Dauphin) knocked down a triple to kickstart an exchange of points between the two teams. Kirsch led Bloomsburg in the quarter with seven points as the team entered the half behind, 44-27.
The Huskies guards led the effort to cut into the deficit in the third quarter. Kale led all players with eight points out of the break to make Pitt Johnstown's lead 15 heading into the final 10 minutes.Â
Despite facing similar situations earlier this season, Bloomsburg failed to maneuver back into the game against a stout Mountain Cats defense. The Huskies were on the doorstep several times in the fourth to cut the lead to single digits but ultimately stalled due to the home side's determination. An 8-0 run from Pitt-Johnstown with 4:13 left in the fourth thwarted any final chances at a rally.
With her increased role as a freshman, Kale has recorded a new career-high point total in consecutive games.
On the Horizon:
The Huskies play their final game before the holidays on Tuesday, December 19, at 5:30 p.m. for a PSAC road matchup against IUP.
