SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg women's basketball team dropped a 75-62 contest to Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action Saturday afternoon. The Huskies fell to 9-15 and 7-13 in conference play, while the Raiders improved to 21-5 and 16-4.
The Huskies had a pair of players in double figures as
Allison Hileman (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) led the squad with 17 points behind a 6-for-9 day from the field and a 4-for-6 performance from beyond the arc. She pulled down seven rebounds and had a steal and an assist.
Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) finished with 14 points and dished out a team-best three assists.
Ella Kale (Spring Grove, PA/Spring Grove) and
Hailey Hudak (Schwenksville, PA/Spring Ford) had a team-best eight rebounds, while Kale chipped in four points and three assists.
The Huskies shot 25-for-59 (42.4%) for the game and were 9-for-25 (36.0%) from beyond the arc. The Huskies went to the free throw line seven times and finished 3-for-7.
Ariel Jones led the Raiders with 38 points and 12 rebounds, while Lauren Pettis had 16 points and 10 boards. Shippensburg shot 29-for-65 (44.6%) for the game and was 4-for-15 (26.7%) from beyond the arc. The Raiders were 13-for-18 from the free-throw line (72.2%).
Bloomsburg won the rebounding battle, 32-30, and neither team could efficiently convert offensive boards into points. The Raiders got 46 points in the paint and converted the Huskies' 16 turnovers into 17 points. Bloomsburg turned Shippensburg's eight turnovers into eight points.
After going basket-for-basket in the first 1:30 of the first quarter, Bloomsburg took a 5-4 lead and maintained the advantage through the first 10 minutes. Hileman hit a three with 19 seconds to play in the first quarter to push the Huskies' lead to 21-17.
Bloomsburg led by as many as seven, 24-17, thanks to a three from Kale, but the Raiders went on a 13-0 run that took five minutes off the clock. Shippensburg led 30-24 with 5:04 to play in the first half. Hileman halted the Raiders' run with another three, but a pair of free throws from Jones kept the Huskies from making a run of their own.
Shippensburg ended the half on a 5-0 run to take a 39-31 lead into the break.
The Huskies cut the lead to seven, 42-35, thanks to a jumper from
Abby Brown (Phillipsburg, N.J./Bethlehem Catholic) with 6:55 to go in the third, but that was as close as the Huskies could make it. Shippensburg closed the game on a 13-9 run to seal the 75-62 win.
The Huskies head home for their final two games of the regular season as they host Kutztown on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and West Chester on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
