Baseball Hangs On For 9-7 Win At Jefferson

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team grabbed its first win of the early season as it held on to beat Jefferson by a final score of 9-7 during an away non-conference game Friday in Philadelphia.

A three-run six inning gave the Huskies their first lead of the game, then a four-run eighth inning gave Bloomsburg enough insurance runs to hang on for the two-run victory.

Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) led the Huskies at the plate as he knocked in four runs on the day and was 2-for-5 with one run scored. Viggiano had three RBI's on a bases-clearing, three-run triple in the eighth inning. The graduate student had his fourth RBI on a single in the seventh.

Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) also had a two-hit game and finished with one RBI to go along with one run scored. Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) and Drew Balestrini (Sunbury, Pa./Shikellamy) added one RBI and one run scored apiece to go along with a hit.

On the mound, Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) was given the start and struck out three hitters in 3.0 innings. Michael Standen (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) threw 3.2 innings and earned the win after striking out one hitter while on the hill. Cole Coolbaugh (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) and Josh Marquard (York, Pa./Central York) combined to throw 2.0 innings in relief.

Bloomsburg scored the first run of the game in the top of the third on an RBI double by Ebbert. Jefferson, however, answered with two runs in the bottom-half of the third to gain a one-run lead. The Rams added an insurance run in the fourth, but the Huskies then had their three-run sixth inning to regain the advantage.

After the two teams traded a run in the seventh, Bloomsburg scored four more in the top of the eighth to hold a 9-4 lead. Jefferson loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth and were able to score three runs, but Marquad was eventually able to pitch out of the jam. Both teams were held scoreless in the ninth as the Huskies held on for the 9-7 win.

The series between the two teams continues with a doubleheader at Bloomsburg on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 PM at Danny Litwhiler Field.
