Women's Basketball Falls To West Chester on Senior Day

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The women's basketball team dropped its final contest of the 2022-23 season as it fell to West Chester 60-48 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division contest at home during Senior Day inside the Nelson Field House on Saturday.

The Huskies (9-17, 7-15 PSAC East) fell behind early on, and the Golden Rams (21-7, 18-4 PSAC East) used some stifling defense to pull out the 12-point victory on the road. With the win, West Chester clinched the top seed for the PSAC East as it finished on top of the division standings.

Bloomsburg was led in scoring by Emma Gochnauer (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg), who finished the game with 12 points to go along with two steals and two assists. Megan Fisher (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) was also in double figures, finishing with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Katie Starr (Berwick, PA/Berwick) was the third and final player for Bloomsburg to finish in double-figures as she had 10 points and five rebounds.

Prior to the game, Gochnauer, Fisher, Samantha Brusha (Abington, PA/Abington) and student manager Kara McClune were honored during the team's Senior Day celebration.

For West Chester, Leah Johnson led the team in scoring with 17 points and she added three steals and four rebounds. Michelle Kozicki had 16 points and 11 rebounds to record a double-double, and Emily McAteer scored 12 points.

The Golden Rams' defense held Bloomsburg to a 36.2% (17-for-47) shooting night and forced 18 turnovers that led to 20 points on the other end. West Chester held Bloomsburg to two points in the opening quarter, which allowed them to gain an early lead as the Golden Rams led 10-2 after the first period of play. The Huskies scored more in the second quarter, but WCU still outscored Bloomsburg 15-12 in the frame to hold a 25-14 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, West Chester scored the first seven points to go up 32-14 in the first two minutes of play. A couple minutes later, WCU was able to stretch its lead to 22, which was the largest of the game. Bloomsburg was able to cut into the deficit prior to the end of the frame, however, as it made it an 18-point game heading into the fourth. Bloomsburg had its best offensive performance in the fourth quarter as it shot 61.54% (8-for-13) from the floor and outscored West Chester 25-19, but the double-digit deficit was too much to overcome as the Golden Rams held on for the 12-point victory.

Bloomsburg knocked down six three-point field goals on the day as Fisher had three, Lauren Kirsch (Palmyra, PA/Lower Dauphin) knocked down two and Maddie LeFrance had one. The Huskies also shot 72.7% (8-for-11) from the line.

West Chester finished the game shooting 41.7% (25-for-60) and scored 40 of its 60 points inside the paint. Additionally, 13 of the team's points came on second-chance opportunities as the Golden Rams had four different players grab a total of 12 offensive rebounds.
