Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Lock Haven, Marshman Ties All-Time Wins Record

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg baseball team split a home doubleheader against Lock Haven on Sunday at Danny Litwhiler Field.

The Huskies (5-6, 1-1 PSAC East) ran away with an 11-3 win over the Bald Eagles (7-5, 1-1 PSAC East) in the first game, then Lock Haven pulled out a 12-8 victory in 10 innings during the second game.

In the first game, graduate student Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) pitched five innings and struck out three hitters while allowing just two runs on seven hits to pick up the win on the mound. With the win, Marshman inched his way closer to setting the all-time wins record as he is now tied for the most career wins in school history with 21. Marshman is tied with J.P. Thomas (1988-91) and Chris Brown (1996-99) for the school record.

Junior right-hander Matt Vernieri (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) relieved Marshman in the fifth and pitched two innings in relief. Vernieri allowed just one run on three hits.

Lock Haven got out to an early lead in the first game by scoring one run in the top of the first inning, but Bloomsburg quickly tied things up in the bottom half of the frame when Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) knocked in Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) on a sacrifice fly.

The Huskies would be able to take their first lead of the game during the third inning in untraditional fashion as Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) scored on a balk. Bloomsburg then scored seven runs across the next two innings to jump out to a 9-2 lead through five innings of play, and the Huskies would add two more insurance runs in the sixth and hang on for the 11-3 victory.

At the plate, Bloomsburg scored its 11 runs on 14 hits that came from eight different players. Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) led the way as he was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and one run batted in. Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) was a perfect 3-for-3 with one walk, an RBI and run scored.

Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) both had doubles, and Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) hit a two-run triple in the fifth inning. Tyler Wiik (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) had a two-run home run in the fourth as Bloomsburg finished the game with five extra-base hits.

In the second game, both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning, which is when Bloomsburg scored two runs to take the first lead of the contest. Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had a solo home run to give the Huskies their first run, then Bryce Porter (Lincoln University, Pa./Perkiomen) scored on a wild pitch to give Bloomsburg a 2-0 lead. The squad then doubled their lead in the fifth when Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had a two-run single to make it a 4-0 game.

Lock Haven, however, would answer in a big way in the sixth and seventh innings. A two-run homer by Joe Shannon in the sixth cut the team's deficit in half, then the squad scored six runs in the seventh inning to take their first lead of the contest. The six-run inning began with an RBI single and walk with the bases loaded that allowed Lock Haven to tie it up at 4-4. Then Bryce Jordan hit a grand slam to make it a 8-4 game.

Bloomsburg was unable to score in the seventh and eighth, but the home team was able to put together a timely four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth to extend the game. The Huskies scored the first run on a lead-off home run by Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech), then Ernst had an RBI double to make it 8-6. Porter was able to knock in another run on a sacrifice fly, then a throwing error with two outs allowed Bloomsburg to tie the game back up at 8-8. Lock Haven's Aeden Walter was able to get a strikeout with the bases loaded to get out of the jam and send it to the 10th inning.

The Bald Eagles were in a similar situation in the top of the 10th as they loaded the bases with two outs, and Gavin Troutman was able to deliver the team's second grand slam of the game as he hit a four-run home run that gave Lock Haven a 12-8 lead. Walter held the Huskies scoreless in the home half of the inning to give LHU the victory.

Walter earned the victory by throwing two scoreless innings and striking out five. Casey Fitzsimmons (Burlington, N.J./Holy Cross) was given the loss after throwing 2.2 innings. Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) started the contest for Bloomsburg and struck out seven through six innings.

The second game saw a total of 20 runs on 26 hits between the two teams. Additionally, a total of 12 pitchers were used in the contest.

Chasanov, Metzger and Viggiano and Porter all had two hits each for the Huskies. Metzger led the way with three RBI's, two runs scored and two walks.

The two teams will finish their three-game series on Thursday at 2:00 PM in Lock Haven. The single game was scheduled to take place on Monday but was postponed to Thursday.
