Softball Starts Conference Play With Sweep Over Mansfield

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bloomsburg softball team opened up its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East series of the season with two wins against Mansfield on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies edged the Mountaineers by a score of 4-1 in the first contest, followed by a blowout 15-0 victory in the latter.

The Huskies' first win of the day was backboned by 14 strikeouts from Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) in her fourth earned win of the young season.

The Husky offense eased into the game as all four of their runs came in the back half of the contest. Three separate Huskies finished with an RBI with Emma Little (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) getting the Huskies on the board first with a double at the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Kranzley (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) went 2-for-2 with a double and Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) all but sealed the game with her first homer of the season at the bottom of the fifth to put the Huskies up 3-0. Kranzley scored an unearned run on a passed ball to close out the Husky offense for the game.

Sowers closed out the final inning on a strikeout as the Huskies prepared for their second contest of the doubleheader.

The Huskies caught fire in their second game with 15 runs from 11 different players.

The Husky offense was surely warmed up as they put up eight runs in the first inning alone. Taylor Welsh (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) got the scoring started on a fielder's choice and the Huskies didn't look back. The very next play, Bella Culp (Harrisburg, Pa/Central Dauphin) singled to center field, scoring two more runs. Sage Weidlich (Pittston, Pa./Pittston) closed out the scoring in the first inning with two RBI's of her own thanks to a double to left center, putting the Huskies up 8-0 early. Weidlich finished the contest 3-of-4 with three RBI's and a double.

After an impressive series of base hits from the Huskies, Kammy Kropinski (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) capped off the offensive explosion for the Huskies with a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to put the Huskies up 15-0.

Callie Sowers (Irwin, Pa/Hempfield Area) pitched the shutout and finished the entire day with 21 strikeouts, seven coming in the second contest.

The Huskies will be back in action this Friday as they travel to Shippensburg and look to continue their hot start against the conference.
