BLOOMSBURG, Pa. –
Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) set the program record for career wins as the Bloomsburg baseball team beat Shepherd twice during a home doubleheader Friday at Danny Litwhiler Field.
Marshman picked up his 22
nd career victory as the Huskies (9-8, 4-5 PSAC East) beat the Rams (14-9, 4-3 PSAC East) 4-3 during the first game, then Bloomsburg topped Shepherd 10-8 in the second game to grab its second win of the day.
With the win, Marshman surpassed J.P. Thomas (1988-91) and Chris Brown (1996-99) as the winningest pitcher in school history. Thomas and Brown were tied for first place with 21 career victories, a record that has been held for over two decades.
The right-handed pitcher threw all seven innings for the Huskies in the first game and picked up seven strikeouts while giving up just three runs on seven hits. With the seven strikeouts, Marshman now has 194 for his career, which is three away from tying Ashton Raines (2016-19) for the No. 2 spot on the all-time career strikeouts list.
During the first game, Shepherd was able to score two of its three runs on Marshman in the top of the second inning to take the first lead of the ballgame. Bloomsburg got one run back in the bottom half of the second when
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had an RBI single to right field that allowed
Dansby Keenan (Cleveland Heights, Oh./Benedictine) to score.
The Rams added one run to its lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI double down the left field line to make it a 3-1 game, but the Huskies knotted it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Keenan hit a two-run home run.
The next inning,
Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) singled down the left field line and then made it happen on the base paths to give Bloomsburg the final lead. LaBarbera advanced into scoring position during the next at-bat on a groundout, then during the next at-bat, LaBarbera swiped third on a wild pitch and the junior was able to advance home when the catcher's throw to third got away from the third baseman. LaBarbera's run made it 4-3, and both pitchers had shutdown innings in the sixth before Marshman closed the door on Shepherd in the seventh as the Huskies hung on for the win.
Shepherd's starting pitcher Trevor Sharp was given his first loss of the 2023 season. Sharp struck out nine hitters and allowed three earned runs in six innings pitched.
At the plate, Keenan and LaBarbera led the way as they both went 3-for-3. Keenan had a double, home run, two RBI's and two runs scored while LaBarbera doubled and scored once.
Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford),
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) and
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) all singled to bring the team's total to nine hits.
In the second game, Shepherd jumped out to an early lead again by scoring one run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. From there, both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning, but that's when Bloomsburg would break the game open.
The Huskies scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits, one of which was a grand slam by
Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) that capped off the rally. Prior to Riley's home run, Bloomsburg scored runs on an Ernst sacrifice fly and wild pitch. Then Riley cleared the bases with a grand slam to make it a 6-1 game.
The offense continued for the Huskies in the fifth as Ernst and Keenan knocked in two more runs to make it an 8-1 game. Shepherd scored three in the top of the sixth, but Bloomsburg responded with two more in the bottom half of the inning to make it 10-4.
Shepherd would rally in the eighth, however, to make it a close ballgame. The Rams had an RBI double, then a three-run homer by Ross Mulhall made the deficit to just two runs as it brought the score to 10-8. Bloomsburg's
Josh Marquard (York, Pa./Central York) was able to get the Huskies out of the inning, then the freshman retired three straight batters in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year.
Nate Baranski (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) started the game on the mound for Bloomsburg and picked up his second win of the year after striking out three hitters and giving up four runs on four hits.
Offensively, Riley paced the Huskies with four RBI's and two hits.
Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, and Chasanov and Keenan both had two hits and an RBI.
The two wins closed the three-game conference series with Shepherd.
Bloomsburg will return to action on Tuesday with a road game at Clarion. The single game is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM.
