Baseball Falls To No. 9 East Stroudsburg In 11 Innings

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The Bloomsburg baseball team fell to No. 9 East Stroudsburg in a back-and-forth 11-inning game Friday on the road.

The Huskies (16-13, 8-8 PSAC East) led the Warriors (30-5, 11-2 PSAC East) through the first eight innings of play behind a strong performance on the mound by Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) and three separate home runs by Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven), Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) and Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy)

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, however, East Stroudsburg was able to score a pair of runs on two RBI singles to tie the game up and send it to extra innings.

Bloomsburg regained the lead in the top of the 10th after a sacrifice fly by Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) put the Huskies back on top 5-4, but ESU answered with another RBI single in the bottom half of the inning though, knotting things up at 5-5 to extend the game once again.

The Huskies received a leadoff single by Ernst in the top of the 11th to get things going, but a pop out on a bunt attempt then double play on a line out ended the scoring threat.

In the bottom of the 11th, ESU's Mike Kelly led off the inning by getting on base following a throwing error. Kelly then stole second during the next at-bat to get the game-winning run into scoring position, and he would later advance to third during the same at-bat on a passed ball.

A pair of walks would then load the bases with no outs, but a clutch strike out would give the Huskies their first out of the inning. With the bases loaded, a ground ball to the short stop set up a double play ball that could've ended the inning, but the throw to first base was unable to get the runner and the game-winning run scored on the play.

Marshman finished the game striking out seven hitters and allowing just two earned runs in 7.2 innings on the mound. East Stroudsburg was forced to use six different pitchers during the contest, and Mike Yates picked up his first win of the season after giving up one run in two innings.

At the plate, the Huskies finished with nine hits from six different players. Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech), Viggiano and Ernst all had two hits. Riley homered and Dansby Keenan (Cleveland Heights, Oh./Benedictine) and Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) recorded singles.

Viggiano knocked in the first run of the game when he hit a solo home run in the top of the third. Ernst then hit a two-run homer to left field to extend the team's lead to 3-0 early. Following an RBI single by East Stroudsburg, Riley then hit his solo shot to put Bloomsburg up 4-1. ESU then rallied with its late-game heroics.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader at Danny Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg. The game, which was originally scheduled to take place Saturday, is scheduled to take place at 12:00 PM. The game was rescheduled due to projected weather for Saturday.
