BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg pitcher
Jared Marshman (Berwick, Pa./Berwick) became the program's all-time leader in strikeouts as he helped lead the baseball team to a 10-3 win over Mansfield during a home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game Thursday afternoon.
Marshman broke the program record with his first strikeout of the game during the third inning, which gave him 222 for his career and surpassed former teammate Chad Cooperman (2017-21).
Marshman finished the game with five strikeouts and the right-hander held Mansfield to three runs on eight hits during eight innings on the mound to pick up his sixth win of the year. The Berwick, Pa. native also upped his career wins total to 25 – a program record that he set earlier this season.
The Huskies (21-13, 11-8 PSAC East) were able to get their offense going early to gain the first lead of the game, then the squad scored a total of six runs across the sixth and seventh innings to end up with the seven-run win over the Mountaineers (12-28, 3-16 PSAC East).
Bloomsburg scored three runs in the bottom of the first to get the scoring started. After getting two runners on base,
Wyatt Metzger (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had an RBI double down the left field line that scored
Brady Gibble (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) from third.
Carter Chasanov (Magnolia, Del./Polytech) then knocked in
Anthony Viggiano (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) on a sacrifice fly, and
Dansby Keenan (Cleveland Heights, Oh./Benedictine) had an RBI single to score the third run of the inning.
Following a scoreless second and third inning, the Huskies were able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly that was hit by
Eli Riley (Harrisburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy). Mansfield got one run back in the fifth as they scored on a groundout to make it a 4-1 game, but Bloomsburg responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to break the game open.
In the sixth, the Huskies loaded the bases with no outs by getting their first three hitters on board. Keenan led the inning off with a single through the left side of the infield, then
Brandon Ernst (Limerick, Pa./Spring Ford) walked. A single by
Jonathan LaBarbera (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) then got the bases juiced.
Brady Ebbert (Etters, Pa./Red Land) was able to deliver the first run of the inning with an RBI single to right field. During the next at-bat, Ernst scored on a passed ball to make it a 6-1 contest.
Still with two runners in scoring position and nobody out, Riley hit a two-run double to left field that scored Ebbert and LaBarbera to make it an 8-1 game. Relief pitcher Bobby Curry was able to get out of the jam, however, with a pair of strikeouts and fly out to end the inning.
The Mountaineers scored another run in the top of the seventh with a solo home run by Zach Spray, but the Huskies were able to answer right away in the bottom half of the inning. The bottom of the seventh started off with Keenan earning a five-pitch walk to lead off the inning, then Ernst reached first base on a catcher's interference call. Following a pop out for the first out of the inning, Ebbert delivered once again with a bases-clearing double to left center that scored Keenan and Ernst to make it a 10-2 game.
Mansfield scored its last run of the game in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly, then relief pitcher
Cole Coolbaugh (Wyoming, Pa./Wyoming Area) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to give Bloomsburg the 10-3 victory.
At the plate, Ebbert led the way by going 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, one run scored and a double. Riley was 2-for-4 with three RBI's, and Keenan was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, one run batted in and two runs scored. Viggiano, Metzger, Ernst and LaBarbera all had one hit apiece to bring Bloomsburg's total to 11.
With the win, Bloomsburg extended its win streak to five. Additionally, the Huskies are now 14-3 in their last 17 games.
As of Thursday, Bloomsburg remains tied for fourth place in the PSAC East standings. The Huskies hold an 11-8 record within the conference, which is tied with Kutztown. The Golden Bears beat East Stroudsburg at home Thursday, 4-2, and will travel to ESU on Friday for a doubleheader.
Bloomsburg will continue its weekend series with Mansfield on Saturday with a doubleheader at Mansfield. The PSAC East doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM.
